Poem written by Hamilton International 7th-grader selected top 10 in nation

Oct. 12, 2011 | Audience: Families, Community, Staff | Contact: Communications, (206) 252-0200

A poem written by Anne Elise Kopta, a 7th-grader at Hamilton International Middle School has been selected from thousands of entries as one of the top ten nationally in her grade division. Creative Communication, the writing company that sponsored the contest, published the poem in the spring edition of its book, “A Celebration of Poets.”

Kopta entered the national poetry competition last spring with her poem, "Fire and Ice." She had written the poem in her 6th-grade Language Arts class as a student with Ms. Patty Chacon. Poems were selected for their literary merit, creativity and social significance.

Because her poem was a top-ten award-winner, Kapta received a $50 savings bond, a special award certificate and a free copy of the "A Celebration of Poets" anthology – containing poetry from both adults and children. In addition, her poem is posted on the website PoeticPower.com as one of the top ten selected in her age group.
