Science coach's secondBook: Writing in Science in Action book on science writing gets published

Oct. 6, 2011 | Audience: Families, Community, Staff | Contact: Communications, (206) 252-0200

Heinemann Publishing has published a second book about science writing by Betsy Rupp Fulwiler, a science coach and consultant for the School District. Hundreds of Seattle teachers have field-tested the book's components and have implemented the science-writing approach. Thousands of teachers across the country are now learning to use this approach.

The book, "Writing in Science in Action," was published in August but work began formally in 1999 when Fulwiler started offering professional development classes on science-writing. She started developing the approach in 1997 as a 5th-grade teacher at John Rogers Elementary School.

The new book includes a DVD that features Seattle Public School students and teachers: Stephanie McPhail, Christine Patrick, Dan Jordan, Deb Schochet Spitzer, Joni Pecor and Nani Castor-Peck.

Fulwiler's first book was published in 2007, titled, "Writing in Science: How to Scaffold Instruction to Support Learning."
