SPS serves up locally grown food for Taste Washington Day
Seattle Public Schools recognized Taste Washington Day on Sept. 28, an annual celebration of Washington-grown foods served in school meals. The local foods served at Greenwood Elementary School included Prosser baby carrots and Whidbey Island grass-fed beef hot dogs.
Taste Washington Day is a partnership between the Washington State Department of Agriculture’s Farm-to-School program and the Washington School Nutrition Association.
Farmers Lisa and Helen (Lisa Sharp and Helen Walsh) handed out samples of fresh President Plums, direct from Luther Farms in Outlook, and talked with students about the health benefits of fresh fruits and vegetables.
Farmer Helen’s work is part of the District’s Harvest of the Month program, which is funded through a Seattle-King County Department of Health, Communities Putting Prevention to Work grant.
