Staff Celebrations

Former B.F. Day teacher selected Puget Sound Regional Teacher of the Year

July 5, 2011 | Audience: Families, Community, Staff | Contact: Puget Sound Educational Service District, (425) 917-7806 or (206) 778-7806

Julie Trout, a former art teacher at B.F. Day Elementary School, and now a teacher at Gatewood Elementary, was selected as the Puget Sound Regional Teacher of the Year. Trout received the award from the Puget Sound Educational Service District.

Trout has been a visual arts specialist at B.F. Day Elementary School since 2008. She created and implemented a thriving visual arts program at the school.

The Teacher of the Year program is part of a nationwide initiative to honor and recognize exceptional educators. Each ESD selects one regional teacher of the year from the school districts within their region. As the PSESD Regional Teacher of the Year, Trout is eligible for consideration as the state’s teacher of the year. The selection process begins in September and the 2012 Washington State Teacher of the Year will be announced in the fall.

In her Teacher of the Year application a retired principal noted, "Julie's instructional practice is creative and grounded in best practice. She gets results! Yet her greatest power as an educator is her ability to shine light and love in the classroom. She instills confidence in children and supports them in taking safe risks in their thinking and learning. Julie consistently holds students accountable to wise, respectful behavior by modeling it herself and fearlessly coaching them to be their best."
