Advanced Learning - Enrollment Options and Retaining Eligibility
Enrollment Options and Retaining Eligibility
Testing for eligibility is necessary prior to enrollment in Advanced Learning programs. Students retain their eligibility designations (academically highly gifted or academically gifted) as long as they remain enrolled in the Accelerated Progress Program, Spectrum, or an Advanced Learning Opportunity School and do not need to re-test each year.
See this Enrollment Options Chart for complete information.
Newly Eligible Students
See the Enrollment web page for Enrollment Service Center locations, guidelines, and enrollment forms for newly-eligible students who wish to enroll in APP or Spectrum. If your child is not currently enrolled in Seattle Public Schools, you must submit a complete enrollment registration.
Enrollment for Advanced Learning Opportunities (ALO) Schools
There is no special enrollment process for ALO schools. All academically gifted and academically highly gifted students at ALO schools are enrolled as "general education" students. ALO schools have access to a list of students who need special gifted services and will provide above grade level services as appropriate. See Program Sites for school sites.
Enrollment for 6th Grade Spectrum
Spectrum students in 5th grade will be automatically assigned to 6th grade Spectrum at their attendance area middle school. Other Spectrum-eligible students [including those in the Advanced Learning Opportunities (ALO) schools] entering grades 6 through 8 who want a middle school Spectrum assignment to their attendance area school must apply to enroll (during or after Open Enrollment through September 30), and will be assigned to Spectrum at their attendance area middle school. Spectrum-eligible students may also apply to enroll for a Spectrum program at any other school through school choice. School choice forms are available from the Enrollment Office.

Currently-enrolled 5th- and 8th-grade Accelerated Progress Program (APP) students are automatically assigned to their regional APP middle school site (for 6th grade) or to Garfield (for 9th grade) and do not need to submit school choice forms.
There are no automatic or guaranteed assignments to Garfield for students who are not enrolled in APP at either Washington or Hamilton.
