Roosevelt seniors selected as candidates in Presidential Scholars program
Roosevelt seniors Sonja Khan and Nancyrose Houston have both been selected as candidates in the 47th annual U.S. Department of Education Presidential Scholars Program. They are among 3,000 candidates chosen out of about 3.2 million high school seniors nationwide. Inclusion in the program, now in its 47th year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors and recognizes high achievement on the basis of academics, strong character, involvement in extracurricular activities and college admission test scores.
The Roosevelt students’ essays, recommendations and follow-up questionnaires are being reviewed as part of the process to be chosen among the 500 semifinalists to be named in April. Out of the semifinalist group, about 100 students will then be chosen as Presidential Scholars, and travelling to Washington DC to participate in events with high ranking government officials, as well as meet the President.
