Family Support Workers program receives youth violence prevention award
The Family Support Workers program of Seattle Public Schools received the 2011 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Award Jan. 15 at a ceremony honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The English Language Learners department also received an award for being nominated. Individual students who received the MLK Peace Award are: Molly Longmire, McClure Middle School; Ahmad McAdory, Interagency; and Khari Miller, Cleveland High School.
All the nominees were evaluated based on the spirit of the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and their contributions to youth violence prevention, peace, leadership, justice, civil rights, community activism and overcoming hardship. The awards are sponsored by the Seattle Center and the Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative.
The winners were announced at a ceremony at the Seattle Center House stage. Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative Director Mariko Lockhart and Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn presented each winner with $100 and their award. All nominees received a certificate honoring their work. The nominees also have an opportunity to share information regarding each other’s contribution and commitment to keeping the Dream alive.
