Lowell Elementary competes in national chess tournament
Lowell Elementary's 4th-grade chess team won 7th place at the National Chess tournament Dec. 10-12 in Orlando, Florida. The three-day chess competition consisted of seven games lasting as long as three hours. About 1,340 students from 43 states participated in the competition – with Washington state fielding 21 students from 17 schools.
The Lowell chess team was the only school from the first ten teams that had two players. Marcell Szabo, who won 6 points out of 7, tied for the second place and got the 4th place overall – making him the highest-placed student from Washington state. Nikita Filippov, the second member of the team, won 4 points and got the second place in his rating category. Both students are good friends and are from the same 4th-grade class (Mrs. Jacobsen's).
Also, the Lowell Chess Club won first place in the Grades 1-3 section at the Bryant Elementary Chess Tournament recently. Lowell's Grades 4-6 team won 2nd place.
