BTA III

Capital Levy is part of Seattle Public Schools' long-range plan to upgrade and renovate aging school facilities on a planned and predictable timetable.  The upcoming capital levy is the Buildings, Technology, and Academics levy (BTA III) that will be presented to Seattle voters on February 9, 2010.  For more details on the levy, check out the BTA III brochure and proposed project description, budget and schedule.

Project Goal
The purpose of this project is to provide the voters of the Seattle Public Schools the opportunity to approve a new six-year Buildings, Technology, and Academics levy (BTA III) in 2010 thus renewing the BTA II levy which expires in 2010.
The scope of work will outline a four-phased project.  Phase 1 will be the hiring and management of a consultant contract to evaluate building conditions and develop cost estimates for the BTA III levy.  Phase 2 will be to gather stakeholder input on the identification of future BTA III projects.  Phase 3a will be environmental review, if necessary.  Phase 3b will develop a draft project list along with levy amounts for review and approval by the Seattle School Board.  Phase 4 will be the levy document materials preparation and filing of said documents with King County Elections.
Community Engagement
Seattle Public Schools held four community meetings in October 2008 and three in May 2009.   Available here is a PowerPoint presentation for the four October community meetings along with community project nominations.
Update and Next Steps
The District completed work on Phase I of Capacity Management and the Building Closure process.  In addition, the District has completed the Building Condition Survey, Educational Adequacy, and Seismic Evaluation of our buildings.  Based on this information and public input on needs, District staff will be briefing the School Board at a work session on May 13, 2009.  Available here are the PowerPoint presentation to bring you up-to-date on proposed BTA III projects along with a tentative timeline and communication plan.

Public Hearing and Board Vote
A public hearing regarding BTA III levy was held on November 12, at 6:00 p.m. in John Stanford Center Auditorium.  The board approved the levy proposal on November 18, 2009.   Below are the detailed Board report and project list:
