MLK Dream Foundation announces scholarship winners; banquet to be held May 20
The Martin Luther King School Dream Foundation announced its 10 scholarship winners for 2013.
All applicants attended the former Martin Luther King Elementary School for at least two years; six students are still attending Seattle Public Schools.
Scholarship winners from Seattle Public Schools are:
• Ballard High -Lilly Konek
• Cleveland High - Jamilah Ousley and Korri Bland
• Garfield High - Rashawd Battles
• Rainier Beach High - Jerimiyah Barquet and Rochelle Middlebrooks
Award winners now attending other school districts are:
• The Bush School - Melody D’Amelio (Olsen)
• Kennedy High - Cheyanne Pitre
• Lindbergh High - Na’imah Muhammad
• Renton High School - Laraysha Tramble
Nine students will each be receiving $l,000 for their post secondary studies. A tenth student, Cheyanne Pitre, has been selected for the Louise McKinney Memorial Award – given to the student with the highest academic achievement.
Funds for that award are being donated by friends and admirers of Mrs. McKinney, a retired Seattle school district administrator, who passed away last year. The amount for that award will be announced at the banquet.
The students will be honored at a scholarship banquet beginning at 6 p.m., Monday, May 20 at the Mount Zion Baptist Church.
State Supreme Court Justice Stephen Gonzalez will be the keynote speaker. Seattle Schools Superintendent José Banda will also be present to congratulate the awardees.
