CONGRATULATIONS: Superintendent, City Librarian treat Global Reading Challenge winners to lunch
Luncheon at John Muir for Global Reading Challenge winnersSeattle Public Schools Superintendent José Banda and Seattle City Librarian Marcellus Turner hosted a lunch at John Muir Elementary School May 14 to honor the school’s Global Reading Challenge winners. John Muir’s team, the “Bookettes,” won the Seattle Championship April 2 at Seattle’s Central Library.

CONGRATULATIONS: Ballard Jazz Band wins first place at Mt. Hood Jazz Festival
Ballard Jazz Band at Mt. Hood Jazz FestivalThe Ballard Jazz Band won first place and the Ballard Jazz Combo placed fourth at the 35th annual Mt. Hood Jazz Festival on May 3. Three students were also recognized as Outstanding Soloists. Both bands were directed by Michael James.

CONGRATULATIONS: Roosevelt wins third place in prestigious Essentially Ellington jazz festival
Roosevelt High School's jazz band won third place at the 18th annual Essentially Ellington High School Competition and Festival held May 10-12 in New York. Roosevelt also won honors for Outstanding Trombone Section, Outstanding Saxophone Section and Outstanding Trumpet Section. Garfield won honors for Outstanding Rhythm Section, Outstanding Saxophone Section, and Outstanding Trumpet Section.

CONGRATULATIONS: Adams Elementary choir sings national anthem at Mariners' May 11 game
The Adams Elementary School choir performed the national anthem at the Mariner's pre-game ceremony on Saturday, May 11, at Safeco Field. Earlier this year, Adams' choir submitted an audition and were chosen to sing at the Mariners vs. Oakland A's game. The event doubled as a fund-raiser for the Adams Elementary music program.

SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE: Decisions on the Measures of Academic Progress assessment
Jose BandaThe Task Force on Assessments and Measuring Progress has developed a list of recommendations on the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessments for the 2013-14 school year. The task force, comprised of principal, teacher, student, family and community representatives, met eight times since February. Based on the task force's feedback, I am making several decisions regarding the MAP assessments for the 2013-14 school year.

DISTRICT: School Board, SEA to vote on tentative 2013-14 school year calendar
The School Board's Executive Committee has recommended that the full Board at its May 15 meeting approve a tentative calendar for the 2013-14 school year. The Seattle Education Association (SEA) is also scheduled to vote on the tentative 2013-14 calendar at its meeting on May 13. The calendar is subject to negotiations and is not final until it is approved by both the School Board and the SEA. The final 2013-14 school calendar will be posted on the District website and a news release will be sent out to families, staff, media and the community as soon as it is approved.  School Board Briefing/Proposed Action Report

SCHOOLS: Food, music, fun at 'Eat Real Festival' at Montlake Elementary May 31
Eat Real - Montlake, a culinary festival aimed at supporting Montlake Elementary School’s Greenhouse and Sustainability Program, will take place from 5-9 p.m., Friday, May 31 on the Montlake Elementary playground. The festival is open to the public and will feature food, school tours, a farmer’s market, raffles and music entertainment.

SCHOOLS: Superintendent Banda leads Bryant Elementary's 'Bike to School Day' ride
bike to school daySuperintendent José Banda joined hundreds of Bryant Elementary students and their parents for a "Bike to School Day" celebration May 8. Seattle School District has put its support behind the bike to school effort and has urged staff to engage students and school communities about biking to school and organizing group rides to class.
