SCHOOLS: Roosevelt geography teacher completes summer conference and field study in South Korea

koreaRichard E. Katz, a geography teacher at Roosevelt High School, completed anj eight-day conference in South Korea made available through The Northeast Asian History Foundation. The conference and its associated field study experience to the southeastern region of the Korean Peninsula enabled Katz to gain direct experience with the Korean people and their culture.

SCHOOLS: SAM features student artwork from Montlake Elementary

SAM postcardThe Seattle Art Museum invites the public to view the exibit of "Small Plants Break Through Concrete," a group exhibition of sculpture, painting and printmaking by the students of Montlake Elementary School. The exhibit runs through July 27 and is free.

Dr. Larry Nyland appointed Interim Superintendent

The Seattle School Board named longtime educator Dr. Larry Nyland during a special meeting July 18 as Interim Superintendent to replace Superintendent José Banda. The Board will conduct a full search with community engagement this fall for a permanent Superintendent. Nyland retired in June 2013 after nine years as the Marysville School District Superintendent.

DISTRICT: Superintendent requests waiver from U.S. Department of Education from several provisions of No Child Left Behind Act
In order to best serve our students and families, Seattle Public Schools is asking the U.S. Department of Education for a Local Educational Agency (LEA) waiver from several provisions in the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), also known as the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).

DISTRICT: Enrollment Services closed July 14 to August 1
The Enrollment Service center will be closed to the public from July 14 through Aug. 1, 2014, in order for the Department of Technology Services to make the necessary new school year transition updates. During this time, the Enrollment front counter will be closed, as well as the Enrollment service mailbox, the Customer service mailbox, faxes, and our Enrollment phone lines. Student and families will not be able to access or submit online choice or admission forms during this time. The Customer Service phone lines and Receptionist desk will remain open to the public to serve those who need to contact other internal personnel or departments. Enrollment will re-open its doors again on August 4 at 8:30 a.m. for start of school late enrollment. More.
