Strategic Plan
Seattle Public Schools is starting the process of revising the current Strategic Plan, Excellence for All. Pivot Learning Partners has been hired to consult with the district to assist in the development of a refreshed plan. An important part of the review is to engage with the community and gather as much feedback as possible to help shape the goals of the district over the next three to five years.
Survey on Draft Revisions to Strategic Plan Framework
Seattle Public Schools is updating its five-year strategic plan, Excellence for All. We asked staff, families, students and members of the community to share feedback through a new survey, which closed on April 15th. This survey asked for an assessment of the draft District vision, mission and core beliefs statements, as well as the draft goals and strategies.
The draft statements, goals and strategies were created with a taskforce consisting of families, teachers, principals, staff, and community and business members. The taskforce assessed Excellence for All and offered recommended changes. The School Board is expected to vote on a final updated plan in July 2013.

Community Meetings on Updating the District's Strategic Plan
Seattle Public Schools hosted five community meetings to share information and asked for public comments about updating the District’s current Strategic Plan, Excellence for All. The updated plan will guide academic and operational priorities for the next three to five years and include ongoing benchmarking to measure the District’s performance.
The community meetings were held at Eckstein Middle School, Chief Sealth High School, Garfield High School, Ballard High School and Aki Kurose Middle School. Each meeting included a joint presentation by district staff and Pivot Learning Partners, the consultants hired to assist the district with the strategic planning process; a summary of the work of the Strategic Plan Task Force and an opportunity for community attendees to offer their perspectives verbally and/or in writing. The updated Strategic Plan is expected to be presented to the School Board for introduction at the June 19 Board meeting and for action at the July 3 Board meeting.
Strategic Plan Stakeholder Taskforce
A key element to gathering feedback is the formation of a Stakeholder Taskforce. The taskforce, made up of approximately 70 people, is a diverse group that includes parents/guardians, teachers, principals, district staff, and community and business leaders. Task force members will offer feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of the district; the student and district profiles; and the vision, mission, and core beliefs of the district; as well as make recommendations on strategic goals and initiatives.
Survey on Current Strategic Plan
Your voice is essential as the strategic plan is updated. Seattle Public Schools asked staff, families, students and members of the community to share their feedback through an online survey, which closed on Thursday, March 7th. This survey focused on prior and/or current experiences with Excellence for All and asked you to share perceptions and assessments of the plan, as well as your level of involvement and connection with the plan. Strategic Plan: Excellence for All
In 2008, the Seattle School Board unanimously approved Excellence for All, our District’s five-year strategic plan. Excellence for All is aimed at ensuring all students graduate from high school ready for college, careers and life. The plan is based on best practices nationally and input from more than 3,000 staff and community members. The plan includes clear and measurable goals - with strategies to achieve them - for our students, schools, staff and district. Excellence For All is our five-year plan to achieve excellence by:

• Building an Infrastructure that Works Well
• Improving Our Systems
• Engaging Stakeholders

2010-2011 District Priorities
To deliver on our commitment to excellence we have focused on the following:
- School Performance Framework –Expansion of critical student programs and services at targeted elementary schools: 90% of students with IEPs on track to achieve measurable goals; ELL students achieve overall high growth as defined by the school performance framework; and 10% of students at each grade level participate in ALO programs
- Math –Targeted elementary schools achieve overall high growth as defined by the school performance framework in making gains on the state math test; 100% of principals participate in PD focused on math differentiation, and 80% of teachers report that principals have shared math instructional strategies
- Early Learning –State kindergarten assessment piloted and evaluated for comprehensiveness; professional development for PreK-1 effectively used in selected classrooms at targeted schools
- College and Career Readiness –Targeted high schools achieve overall high growth as defined by the school performance framework on their college readiness measures; All families with high school students receive information on college entrance requirements (2yr & 4yr) to guide high school course selection
- Evaluations –new teacher and principal evaluation tools developed and implemented
- Family Engagement –50% of responding families at targeted schools indicate an increased ability to help with their students’ learning at home; the superintendent’s annual community engagement schedule includes 10 opportunities to directly meet with and listen to families

2010-2011 Initiatives/Updates
- Southeast Education Initiative– Approved by the School Board in spring 2007 as part of the Student Assignment Framework, the Southeast Education Initiative focuses resources and support to three schools in Southeast Seattle: Aki Kurose Middle School and Cleveland and Rainier Beach High Schools. The goal is to raise student academic achievement through a combination of strengthened academic offerings and signature programs. As the Southeast Education Initiative was implemented, the district began developing a district-wide approach to support struggling schools and the Southeast Education Initiative was incorporated into these broader efforts.
