Adopted 2016-17 School Start and End Times

View the School Board adopted 2016-17 individual school start and end times here.

The newly adopted bell times for the 2016-17 school year focus on four important planning assumptions:

    • Meet American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommended start time for adolescents
    • Prioritize Title 1 programs to earlier tiers to support district equity considerations
    • Maximize the number of schools in Tier 1 and 2
    • Be Transportation Cost Neutral

    Timeline

This work was divided into 2 sections and 8 phases.

Part 1: The Feasibility Study: Phases 1-3 (November 2014-November 2015)

Part 2: Implementation and Mitigation: Phases 4-8 (December 2015-September 2016)

    Feasibility Study

Research has shown that teenagers may benefit from later start times with more sleep, better health, increased academics and improved truancy rates.

In response to a year-long study by Seattle Public Schools on the changing of school bell times to better reflect the sleep rhythms of students, the Seattle School Board adopted new Transportation Service Standards that would revise arrival and departure times for the 2016-17 school year.
