Metro Transportation for Ballard and Franklin High School Students

Beginning in September 2006, Ballard and Franklin high school students who are eligible for transportation will ride Metro buses. (Yellow buses will not be used, except for special education services). They will join the many secondary students who already ride Metro buses to school.

Who is eligible for Metro transportation?
Ballard and Franklin high school students are eligible for transportation if they live more than 2.5 miles from school. If your student has a special education Individual Education Plan (IEP) or 504 accessibility plan, transportation will be provided consistent with those plans.

Why is this change being made?
After many months of study and consideration, this pilot program for students at Ballard and Franklin high schools was approved by the School Board in March 2006. Use of Metro buses allows students more flexibility to attend early morning or after-school activities; provides students with the chance to use the Metro pass for transportation to other locations; and saves operational costs that can be redirected to instruction.

Use of Metro also means that high schools have more flexibility in school start and stop times. For Ballard and Franklin, this change means that school will start later in 2006-2007. Ballard will operate from 8:20 am - 2:50 pm. Franklin will operate from 8:00 am - 2:30 pm.

What bus will my student take?
Before school starts in the fall, the transportation department will mail specific route information to each eligible student (those who live more than 2.5 miles from school). This information will include routes and times and will be determined for your student individually, based on your address.

When will my student receive his or her Metro pass?
Before school starts in the fall, we will mail Metro "scrip" to all eligible students (those who live more than 2.5 miles from school) to pay the bus fare on the first day of school. Eligible students will be able to pick up their bus pass at school on the first day. The bus pass will be valid for free, unlimited rides for travel at any time on Metro Transit (non-special service only).
