Classes and Schedules
2007 - 2008 School Year
A person wanting to get a Washington State driver license before
the age of 18 years must successfully complete a certified
driver-training course. Students who are at least 15 years of age
by the first day of class may register for a traffic education
program. All students must be able to obtain an Instruction Permit
through the Department of Licensing. If there is a potential legal,
medical, or vision problem that might prohibit the student from
getting a permit, check with the DOL before registering for a
class. Paid students will be given an Application for
Instruction Permit. This will allow them to get a permit
without having to take the written test at the DOL until after the
course has been successfully completed.
Students in after-school programs are provided with session
calendars by the second classroom day. Saturday and Summer program
students receive their calendars on the first classroom day.
Calendars are marked showing classroom and driving days. Schedules
follow the Seattle School District calendar, e.g., if school is
not in session, traffic education programs do not
meet. Please see Saturday and Private School
information below for their schedules.
Reminder: Additional Seattle Public Schools high
schools will change from Yellow Bus service to Metro
bus transportation at the beginning of the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009
school years.
Tuition for the 2008 - 2009 school year will increase
beginning September 1, 2008 to cover increasing gasoline and
program-related costs. Please see our Traffic Education Fees
page for details.
The State of Washington now requires all traffic safety
education programs to provide an additional two hours of
behind-the-wheel instruction. This requirement resulted in an
increase in tuition for the 2007-2008 school year to cover the cost
of additional teacher hours, gasoline, etc. Please note that it may
be necessary to raise fees again for the 2008-2009 school year to
adjust for gasoline and other program-related costs.
Tuition for all 2007 ? 2008 programs is $415.00 (e.g.,
after-school, Saturday, and summer programs). Students who
successfully finish a traffic education course will receive a
certificate of completion. It must be presented to the Department
of Licensing before it will schedule the driving portion of the
licensing test.
Programs will be held at a school based on sufficient
enrollment. All programs consist of 30 hours of classroom
instruction and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel driving
time.
Forms and registration information for all Seattle Public
Schools programs are available in high school counseling offices.
Private schools that offer our program will also have registration
forms.
After-school Programs
After-school programs are offered at Ballard, Franklin,
Garfield, Nathan Hale, Ingraham, Roosevelt, Chief Sealth and West
Seattle high schools. (Please see Private School offerings below.)
After-school programs will not be offered at Cleveland or Rainier
Beach high schools because of the lack of sufficient enrollment.
Franklin offers a 4:45 to 6:45 class to accommodate students coming
from other school programs.
Depending on the school and the time the school day ends,
classes start 10 to 15 minutes after the last class. If enrollment
numbers are large enough, there may be additional later classes at
Ballard, Blanchet, Franklin, Garfield and Roosevelt (see individual
schools below). Regular attendance in the classroom and at
behind-the-wheel-driving sessions is required. Permit applications
are distributed on Registration Day to students who have paid the
full tuition amount. Driving schedules are distributed by the
second classroom day.

to students by the second classroom day.
The Traffic Education program provides cars for driving
sessions. Students must provide their own transportation after
classes and driving sessions.
Saturday
Programs
Two Saturday programs are offered during the school year. There
are no Saturday programs held during the summer. There must be at
least nine students enrolled to hold a class at a school.
Registration is completed by mail. Blue mail-in packets are
available at the high schools in counseling offices, the Traffic
Education office and some private schools. The Traffic Education
office cannot mail out individual registration packets. Do not
return your registration to a school. Mail to the address on the
blue envelope.
Classes will be offered at Ballard, Franklin, Nathan Hale, and
West Seattle high schools. This program involves a commitment of 15
Saturdays, some of which may be on holiday weekends (i.e. classes
will be held on November 17, but not on November 24). Behind-the
wheel driving sessions will be held either before or after
classroom instruction. A calendar showing classroom and driving
days is given to students on the first day. Depending on the
school, classroom instruction is from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. or from
10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Call the Traffic Education office for
classroom meeting times at individual schools.

start one week later, February 9. Registrations for the spring
session will not be accepted until the first week of January and
will be accepted until January 31 or until classes are full.)
Schedule Requests: If requested, the Traffic Education
Department will try to schedule students to be finished by noon.
Requests must be made in writing at the time of registration
stating the reason. There are no all-afternoon Saturday
programs.
The Traffic Education program provides cars for driving
sessions. Students must provide their own transportation to and
from the school. A $45.00 fee may be charged if a student misses
the final drive session (the final test).
The 2008 Summer School program runs from
June 23 to July 23, 2008.
(Information updated April 22, 2008)
(Please note: There will be a tuition increase
beginning September 1, 2008. The summer program will be the last
opportunity to take the course at the lower fee.)
Students should not register unless they can commit to a
Monday through Friday schedule for the entire 5-week course.
Vacations, jobs, sports, or other activities cannot conflict with
classroom or driving schedules. Registration is conducted by mail.
Packets will be available at high school counseling offices, some
private schools and agencies, and the Traffic Education office the
first week of May. Registrations must be received by June 2 to
be guaranteed the school of choice. Those received June 9 or later
will be accepted on a space available basis. Students should
register for a school that will be convenient to get to during the
summer. At this time classes are scheduled to be held at Ballard,

King, Rainier Beach, Roosevelt, Chief Sealth, and West Seattle
schools.

parent/guardian in writing (mail, fax or email) by June 13.
