Summer Semester 2009: Summer College

  • Overview: Summer College is an innovative partnership between the Seattle Public Schools, the Seattle Community College District and the City of Seattle. Summer College provides students with an opportunity to experience life on a community college campus, earn credits towards high school graduation and accelerate student achievement through curriculum focused on meeting standard on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL). The program will be located on three community college campuses – South Seattle, Seattle Central, and North Seattle.
  • Eligibility: SPS students that scored level II on the 10th grade Math, Reading, and/or Writing WASL and plans to retest during August 11-13 are eligible.
  • Referral: High School Pathway Deans refer eligible and interested students for Summer College. This includes selecting the site. The family is asked to complete an enrollment form and the student is asked complete a brief application. The referral period ends on June 17th.
  • Enrollment: The Pathway Deans send the enrollment materials to the Summer School Office. Students are enrolled and assigned a schedule. Letters will be sent to families to confirm enrollment and site.
  • Transportation: Enrolled students will be provided with metro bus tokens or weekly passes.
  • Dates: Classes start Monday, June 29th. The last day of classes for students is Thursday, August 6th. Students will be schedule to retake the appropriate WASL tests during August 11-13.
  • Daily Schedule: Classes are held Monday through Thursday from 9:00am-2:30pm. Lunch is provided to students.
  • Sites: North Seattle, Seattle Central, and South Seattle Community Colleges.
  • Courses: Students will be assigned to two classes (math/reading, math/writing, or reading/writing) taught by Seattle Public School teachers. Students will also be scheduled an elective class taught by a Community College instructor. Students are able to earn up to 1.5 credits for passing all three classes.
