SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING & MATHEMATICS
PROGRAM AT CLEVELAND HIGH SCHOOL

INTRODUCING STEM!

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, fields that are the underpinnings of modern life.

Starting in September 2010, Cleveland High School will become an Option School, which means any interested student currently in grades 8 through 11 can apply to attend. For 9th- and 10th-graders, Cleveland will implement a STEM program with a focus on project-based learning. Juniors and seniors will be enrolled in an equally rigorous College Readiness Academy. There will be support for students who are behind and acceleration for those that want to be challenged further.

TWO STEM ACADEMIES TO MEET STUDENTS’ VARIED INTERESTS

Starting in September 2010, Cleveland High School will be home to two STEM academies. (A third College Readiness Academy will serve 11th and 12th graders until full implementation in 2012-2013). Students in both academies will continue to be Cleveland Eagles.

The two STEM academies will be:

  • Life Sciences & Global Health, which will focus on the life sciences, including biology and biochemistry, as well as global health issues.
  • Engineering & Design, which will focus on the physical sciences and technology. This academy will feature a computer game design program and a pre-engineering program that will expose students to leading edge technologies in robotics, aeronautics, rocket design, and alternative energy.

To facilitate a learning environment where every student is known by the adults in that building, each STEM academy will create its own unique culture and identity. Students in the two STEM academies will take most of their core-content classes within their own academy. Because Cleveland has two buildings, classes for each academy will largely be housed in separate buildings. Students in the two academies will come together for elective classes, such as art, world languages, music, and Physical Education; for sports and extracurricular activities. Both academies will use the Cleveland gym and the Commons.
