Safe School Environment

Goal: Enhance school security through increased preparedness for critical incidents.

In response to a school safety assessment, it was determined that a number of Seattle Public Schools are in need of additional security measures. By June 2004, all schools will have the equipment necessary to adequately monitor building entrances and common areas. Additionally, all classrooms and portables will have the ability, via newly installed phones and portable radios, to communicate with the main office. Concurrently, as security monitoring is being improved, SPS will implement the web-based Critical Incident Management Systems (CIMS). This system includes a web-based emergency response plan this is consistent, easy to maintain, and a more efficient way for school staff and emergency responders to take action when there are critical incidents at schools. Full implementation of CIMS includes development of the system itself along with the training of school staff and emergency responders in the community.

“One of the top priorities of our Board is to enhance the safety and security of our students. We are fully committed to creating a climate of respect and inclusion in our schools.” -Nancy Waldman, President, Seattle School Board

Preparedness for critical incidents will be further enhanced through the development of a joint plan with Seattle Police Department (SPD) for dealing with violent situations in schools. SPD as School Emphasis Team Officers assigned to patrol Seattle’s middle and high schools. With a change in SPD protocols for dealing with violent situations at schools, police officers will play a more active role in intervening in the situation rather than waiting for a SWAT team to arrive. In order to ensure the most effective response to violent situations, SPS must actively coordinate with SPD. In a joint training provided by SPS security staff and SPD’s training team, 600 police officers will receive training in dealing with violent incidents at schools.
