Response to Intervention (RTI)

An Integrated Framework for Teaching and Learning
Every Student Achieving, Everyone Accountable

As SPS strives to meet its goal to provide optimal support for all learners, a Response to Intervention model will be implemented district wide utilizing assessment data and progress monitoring tools. RtI will:

  • Determine which students need academic and/or behavioral interventions,
  • Determine which kind(s) of intervention(s) will best meet those needs, and
  • Track students' response to those interventions.

RtI will operationalize the SPS strategic plan, Excellence for All, through a tiered support system in which all students are provided with high quality universal academic and behavioral instruction, early assessments to identify struggling students, research-based interventions based on specific needs, continuous progress monitoring, as well as continued access to core curriculum.

RTI model

The adoption of the RtI framework changes the way SPS improves student achievement by:

  • Developing a system that is ready to respond to student needs before failure occurs,
  • Integrating data-driven decision making into instructional planning and reflection, and
  • Redefining and aligning the processes and outcomes of coaching across disciplines.

Because we cannot expect every student, classroom or school to look the same, the model is designed to be fluid; integrating elements of differentiated instruction, data driven decision making, and school-based problem solving into academic and behavioral planning.

Across the nation, evidence is accumulating in support of RtI. Tiered support models which integrate existing best practices while clearly filling gaps in district-wide assessment, intervention and instructional strategies, have delivered exceptional outcomes. This framework will also address NCLB, OSPI and IDEA mandates and our efforts around closing the achievement gap.
