Teaching American History Grant

The Seattle Public Schools Teaching American History Grant will provide professional development for teachers in grades 5-12 in American History content and best practices instructional strategies. Teachers will engage in authentic intellectual work by attending lectures provided by historians, reading primary source documents, and researching multiple perspectives on historical events.

"The Teaching American History Grant program will support programs to raise student achievement by improving teachers' knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of American history.

The goal of this program is to demonstrate how school districts and institutions with expertise in American history can collaborate over a three-year period to ensure that teachers develop the knowledge and skills necessary to teach…history in an exciting and engaging way.

Through these projects, districts will demonstrate comprehensive professional development approaches for providing high-quality American history instruction. Students will develop an appreciation for the great ideas of American history."

Participants in the Seattle Public Schools TAH cohort meet several times during the school year for professional development sessions. These sessions often include a half day of lecture by a local historian or expert, followed by time to engage as students of history through authentic intellectual work and best practices pedagogy, or collaborate with colleagues to develop standards-based lesson plans and learning experiences for students in our classrooms. Summer field work at local museums and historical sites offer opportunities for teachers to familiarize themselves with resources they can use in their classrooms, as well as develop their own background knowledge about historical events.

If you are interested in joining the TAH cohort of teachers, please contact Anita Morales.
