Welcome to the Science Materials
Center
The Science Materials Center (SMC) supports
PreK-12 science inquiry instruction in Seattle Public Schools and
select other districts/schools. We provide units and modules and
their supporting materials to implement the adopted PreK-8
curriculum, with limited support for high schools. Find more information and support
documents for middle school science modules. Learn more about the SMC.

July 7 - 24, 2008
This summer, send your students to Green land's glaciers - without
leaving home.
Connect reading and science through an online Arctic
expedition.
The Poles are changing in ways that will impact the global
climate, natural ecosystems, and human societies. Starting July
7th, a team of scientists will journe to the western edge of
Greenland to study how - and how fast - glacial ice is
disappearing. Explore with them through daily phtojournals,
podcasts, video clips, and e3-mail exchanges. (Funded by the
National Science Foundation and the Richard King Mellon
Foundation)
Live Materials Order
Forms
If your elementary science unit uses live
materials that do not come from Carolina Biological, you will no
longer find the order form inside your kit. Forms inside kits
become out-of-date too easily. Please go to the Inventory
page then select your unit for its live material cards. Complete
the page for each card and submit it to us
electronically.
2007-2008 Science Unit
Rotation
The rotation schedule for science units has been
changed this school year, for most grades. Each unit will only be
offered twice a year, rather than three times; primarily, this is
to coordinate with professional development. Please see the rotation
schedule and find your school.
Changes in your personal
information
If your school, grade level assignment, last
name, etc. are changing, or you're retiring/taking a leave of
absence, please let me know. You can email the
information directly to the SMC or use this
form.
Science
Stories books
The Ecosystems, Food Chemistry, Microworlds,
Circuits and Pathways, and Liquids units come with a set of
Science Stories, which are written for the unit and
support literacy. The Stories come in a separate box, and
must be returned in the box. Please don't return them inside your
kit. We have to immediately send the books back out and cannot
readily remove them from the hundreds of kits coming in.
Initial Use
Classes
Please note that before you can get a unit for
the first time, you need to take the Initial Use classes. Once you
take the class, the unit is automatically sent to you each year.
Please note: training for each unit will be offered only twice
during the year.
