What are
Supplemental Educational Services (SES)?
- This is additional
academic instruction to increase the academic achievement of
students who are low income and who attend schools that have not
made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for 3 or more years.
- The
per student allocation for SES free tutoring for the 2009-2010
school year is $1589.00
- SES
is in addition to instruction provided during the school day, and
must be consistent with the content and instruction used by the
school district. They are aligned with the State’s academic
content and achievement standards.
- SES
must be high quality, research-based, and specifically designed to
increase student academic achievement.
- For
the 2009-2010 school year, students at the following schools who
participate in free or reduced lunch are eligible to apply for free
SES tutoring.

SES Timeline for
the 2009-2010 School Year
Seattle Public Schools
complies with federal law, 34 CFR Part 200, to ensure that free
tutoring information is available to schools and parents during a
minimum of 2 separate enrollment windows, at separate points during
the school year, that are of sufficient length to enable parents of
eligible students to make informed decisions about requesting SES
and selecting a provider (Section 200.48 paragraph (d)(2)(i)(B)(3).
The following information will be distributed and made available to
schools, families, and/or providers during the 2009-2010 school
year:
- A
letter (with translations) is sent in August informing parents that
free tutoring will be available at eligible schools and that
specific information will be sent home in September.
- In
September, letters (with translations) are sent to families,
schools, and providers informing them that the first open
enrollment period will be October 1-30, 2009. An enrollment form,
and an invitation to the provider fair on Saturday October 3, 2009,
is included in this letter.
- Family outreach
meetings, with interpreters, are held at SES school sites during
September to educate parents about SES.
- The
provider fair is held on Saturday October 3, 2009.
- Information about free
tutoring remains in the lobby of the district office from October 1
until October 30.
- Information and free
tutoring applications (with translations) are delivered to all SES
schools the week of October 1.
- Information and free
tutoring applications are sent to the secretary and family support
worker at each school by October 1.
- All
enrollment forms received by the deadline are processed beginning
the week of November 2.
- Beginning the week of
November 9, provider contracts, and parent letters (with
translations) are mailed out to confirm enrollment.
- Monitoring/review of
student learning plans, enrollment, provider invoices, learning
plans, and progress reports, via EZSES, continues throughout the
year.
- The
week of January 25, 2010, a letter is sent to all eligible families
who have not yet requested free tutoring, informing them that they
have another opportunity to sign up and that their form must be
received by the School Improvement Office by Friday February 19,
2010. This is the final enrollment period and no forms are accepted
after this date.
- All
forms received by the deadline are processed the week of February
22.
- Beginning the week of
March 1, provider contracts, and parent letters (with translations)
are mailed out to confirm enrollment.
- May
2010, a survey is sent to all parents of SES enrolled
students.
- Providers submit
summary data for all students served by June 15, 2010.
- SES
provider summary report is completed and submitted to OSPI before
June 30, 2010.
