Leases of Closed
School Buildings (Short and Medium Term)
Closed school
buildings that are not declared surplus by the School Board may be
leased out for short and medium terms, up to 10 years. At this
time, the District has leased out the Cedar Park , North Queen
Anne, Rainier View, and Sand Point, on lease terms up to ten
years. Contact Anny Cheung-Brothers for information about
these leases, at acheung@seattleschools.org.
Long Term Leases
and Sales
Sites which have been
declared surplus by the School Board may be leased on a long term
basis or sold. Current long term leases (in excess of 50
years) are in effect for the Interlake ( Wallingford Center ),
Jefferson Square , Lake City , Oak Lake , and West Queen Anne
sites.
In
Spring 2008 the District entered into a contract to sell the Queen
Anne Gym property. This sale is projected to close during
2009.
In
June 2007, the School Board declared the Allen, Crown Hill,
Fauntleroy, University Heights and Webster sites to be surplus to
the District’s needs. The District is negotiating sales
of these sites to the long time tenant of each site and expects to
complete sales for all these properties (except the Webster school
building) during 2009. The Webster building is rented to the
Nordic Heritage Museum through 2014.
The
School Board also declared the Martin Luther King school surplus in
2007. In preparation for long term lease or sale of the
property, the District has asked the City of Seattle Department of
Neighborhoods to convene a School Use Advisory Committee
(SUAC). The draft SUAC recommendations are available at Martin Luther King SUAC, and
a meeting is scheduled for 7 PM at the T.T. Minor Elementary School
on December 9 to consider the draft recommendations. A final
decision on the permitted uses for the property is expected in
early 2009, at which time the District will conduct a request for
proposals process seeking offers to lease or purchase the
property.
Other Closed
School Sites
In
addition to the sites mentioned above, other closed school sites
include McDonald and Magnolia (emergency sites). The Hughes
and Viewlands sites are being maintained for future use.
If
schools are closed as part of the current review of school capacity
and enrollment, these buildings will be considered for short and
medium term leases, subject to District needs.
For
additional information on leases and sales, contact Ron English at
renglish@seattleschools.org.
