Audience: Bilingual Instructional Assistants and Interested School Staff

1.19 Communicating with Families and Colleagues

Course Description: Offer guidelines to help IAs and school staff utilize best practices when using interpreters to communicate with families of Non-English speakers. Participants will learn the different between interpreters and translators, techniques to improve communication utilizing interpreter, guidelines to conduct effective meetings with families and assisted in specific interpretation task, such as IEP conference.

Course Objectives:
As a result of participation, registrants will:

  • Know and demonstrate the process of effective translation
  • Know and demonstrate the process of effective interpretation, including necessary communication to others involved the interpretation setting
  • Know the purpose of I.E.P. and how students become eligible for Special Education Services.
