Science Writing Symposium.
The purpose of this Symposium is to:
- Learn more
about the power of expository writing in inquiry
science.
- Disseminate
Writing in Science: How to Scaffold Instruction to Support
Learning, Heinemann’s newly published book by Seattle
Public Schools’ Science Consultant Betsy Rupp
Fulwiler.
- Inspire
educators with a science-writing approach that research has shown
is effective in providing more equitable outcomes for all students
in both science and expository writing.

Saul (Both sessions)
Topic of Speech:
Science and Literacy Connection
Dr. Wendy Saul is a professor at the University of
Missouri, St. Louis where she serves as the Allen B. and Helen S.
Shopmaker Endowed Professor of Education and International Studies.
Before coming to Missouri, Dr. Saul was a Professor of Education at
the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Years ago she
taught junior high school on New York City’s lower east side
and worked as Education Director of the Grand Street Settlement
House. For the past 15 years, Dr. Saul has served as
Principal Investigator for various National Science Foundation
grants that explore the relationship between science and literacy.
For her work in “bringing science to children,
their parents, teachers and librarians” she has been named a
Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of
Science.

Symposium will be offered twice:
Option 1: 1:00–3:30 P.M. (For
Seattle Public School teachers, substitute release will be
provided.)
Option 2: 4:15–6:45 P.M.
(Seattle Public School teachers will be paid at the rate of $15.44
per hour.)
