CMP2 Initial Use Class, New 6th Grade Teachers

Participants:  This course is designed for teachers using the CMP2 6th Grade materials who did not take this class in ’06-’07.  It is for general education mathematics teachers as well as those teachers with Special Education, ELL and Advanced Learning students.  The course consists of a three-day summer session and six one-day sessions during the school year.

Course Description
In this course participants will:

  • Work on the mathematical content of each unit
  • Examine effective ways to develop deeper understanding and reasoning for all students
  • Do lesson and unit planning
  • Examine differentiated instructional methods to meet the needs of all students inclusive of Special Education, ELL and Advanced Placement students
  • Work with the technology components of the program

CMP2 Initial Use Class, New 7th Grade Teachers

Participants
:  This course is designed for teachers using the CMP2 7th Grade materials who did not take this class in ’06-’07.  It is for general education mathematics teachers as well as those teachers with Special Education, ELL and Advanced Learning students.  The course consists of a three-day summer session and six one-day sessions during the school year.

Course Description
In this course participants will:

CMP2 Initial Use Class, 8th Grade Teachers

Participants: This course is designed for teachers using the newly adopted CMP2 8th Grade materials.  It is for general education mathematics teachers as well as those teachers with Special Education, ELL and Advanced Learning students.   The course is required for teachers who did not take a CMP2 Initial-Use class offered in ’06-’07 and optional for teachers who have taken the Initial-Use class at another grade level.  Please consult with your principal about the appropriate class to take.

Best Practices with CMP2

Participants: This course is for teachers who attended the CMP2 Initial Use class in ‘06-’07.  It is expected that each school’s “studio” teacher and mathematics coach will take this course.  The course is optional but encouraged for “residency” teachers.   The course consists of a 5-day summer session and will set the foundation for the collaborative lesson study work during the school year.

Course Description:
In this course participants will:

  • Experience and learn research-proven methods for promoting discourse and problem solving
  • Gain tools that support teachers’ intensive reflection about their students’ learning as a basis for instructional planning and decision-making
  • Sharpen their “critical eye” for instructional practices, tasks, and materials that foster:
  • Student understanding, invention, and sense making
  • A discourse-rich and productive classroom culture
  • Engagement in worthwhile mathematics tasks
  • Accessibility and rigorous learning by all students – strugglers, language learners, and high achievers
  • Learn to implement and enhance mathematics lessons and tasks to assure high-cognitive student engagement and to maximize learning

Continuing Use/Lesson Study

Participants: This course will bring together grade-level teams of “residency” teachers, “studio” teachers, mathematics coaches and administrators to do a series of Lesson Study cycles during the ’07-’08 school year.  Teachers who attended a CMP2 Initial-Use class in ’06-’07 should participate.

Course Description
The Lesson Study program will utilize the Teacher Development Group’s Collaborative Lesson Planning format.  For each Lesson Study cycle a grade-level team of teachers, coaches and administrators from a cluster of schools will come together to:
Plan a lesson
Observe the lesson in a studio classroom
Debrief the lesson and plan next steps

DMI- Patterns, Functions, and Change
Developing Mathematical Ideas: Patterns, Functions and Change

Facilitator: Dr. Gini Stimpson

This course is designed to examine how students develop an understanding of the foundational algebra concepts of functions and change.   At the center of the course are classroom cases (both written and video-taped) illustrating student thinking. The class offers teachers the opportunities to view and discuss videotapes of classrooms and students, to explore mathematics in lessons, to share and discuss the work of their own students, to analyze lessons and to read overviews of related research.

Program Description
Participants in the seminar Patterns, Functions and Change explore how the study of repeating patterns and number sequences in early grades can be used to develop foundational ideas about functions.  They examine how various features of a function are seen in graphs, tables, and rules written in both sentences and algebraic notation.  Participants examine how students read tables and graphs in order to interpret phenomena of change.

Participants will be able to:

  •       Analyze a case to determine the key mathematical ideas and puzzling questions for students within that case
  •       Learn to support the power and complexity of student thinking
  •       Identify teacher moves that advance students’ understanding of functions
  •       Articulate a vision of exemplary mathematical practice

Who Should Participate?
The seminar is designed for teachers from kindergarten through grade eight.

Dates:  July 21-25, 2008, 8:30 AM -3:30 PM

Location: Stanford Center

MEC Patterns, Functions and Algebraic Reasoning

Facilitator: M. E. C. /Ruth Parker

Pay: Teachers are paid at the hourly rate of $23.77/hour.

This Course is limited to five SPS participants.  Teachers from high-impact schools will receive the priority.  Registrants will be notified of their opportunity to participate by June 15th.
MEC’s Patterns, Functions & Algebraic Reasoningcourse develops and deepens participant understanding of:

  • the essential mathematics of patterns, functions and algebraic thinking
  • the nature of learning and characteristics of an optimal learning environment
  • ways of assessing mathematical understandings.

In addition to the focus on algebraic reasoning and the inter-relatedness of algebra and geometry, participants develop numerical reasoning skills.
Practices modeled in this nine-day course prepare educators to help students become successful problem solvers who are able to use mathematics as a powerful tool for making sense of situations and information in the world. Based on course learning experiences, participants consider how to fundamentally restructure their classrooms to fully align with how people learn mathematics.
