Use this page to register for High School, Middle School and K-5 training in Literacy Instruction.

All professional development sessions will assist you in implementing best practices in literacy instruction based on a comprehensive Balanced Literacy Program

Goal of the Balanced Literacy Program is to ensure that all pre-Kindergarten through twelfth grade students become joyous, proficient, critical and confident readers and writers, motivated to read and write widely throughout their lifetimes.

To achieve this goal, the reading and writing program within Seattle Public Schools is based on a comprehensive, balanced approach in which reading and writing are regarded as complementary processes. Teachers are expected to have their students read a wide range of fiction and nonfiction genres, write in a variety of genres and explicitly teach reading and writing skills and strategies. Students have multiple opportunities, daily to share their understanding of what they read and write through oral, written and artistic expression.
