Seattle Middle School Students Receive Mayor's Scholars Awards

At a Glance: More than 20 middle school students from Aki Kurose, Asa Mercer, Denny, Madison, Madrona, McClure, Pathfinder, Seahawks Academy, Summit, TOPS and Washington were selected for the 2004 Mayor's Scholars Awards. Mayor Greg Nickels will present each student with a special letterjacket and $500 to further their education or contribute to the charity of their choice at an evening reception at City Hall. Students are selected for the honor based on community service experience, life goals and academic achievement. Mayor's Scholars are "unsung heroes" who have overcome challenges in their lives, are doing well in school and have demonstrated a commitment to the community by their actions.

Seattle Asian Art Museum Unveils "Sanislo Feast"

At a Glance: "Sanislo Feast" a 50 foot long art scroll made by 4 th and 5 th graders from Sanislo Elementary will go on display at the Seattle Asian Art Museum (SAAM) in Volunteer Park. Students, inspired by contemporary Chinese artist Li Jin, set out to re-create their own version of his 60 foot long painting, "A Feast," which depicts dishes from a traditional Chinese dinner on a background of recipes written in Chinese calligraphy. Sanislo art teachers, Ruth Winter and Carolyn Autenrieth, designed the art project to celebrate the diversity of cultures at their school. Students painted favorite ethnic foods and staff helped transcribe the recipes in their original language. The scroll portrays food and languages from 17 different nations and cultures, reflecting the heritage of Sanislo students and staff. Students, families and teachers will commemorate the unveiling of "Sanislo Feast" with a special celebration at SAAM.

Cleveland High School Students Host Mayor Greg Nickels for Q&A Session

At a Glance: In partnership with Seattle Student Voices and the Seattle Channel, students from the Global Academy at Cleveland High School will host an hour-long question and answer session with Mayor Greg Nickels. The show is the first in a planned four-part series in which Seattle high school students will have an opportunity to discuss current issues with civic leaders. Television air dates are to be determined.

Seattle Student Voices is part of the National Student Voices Project, an initiative of the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania, that has been implemented in Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Los Angeles, New York City, Newark, Philadelphia, San Antonio, Tulsa, and Washington, DC. The student-focused program aims to increase the understanding of political processes and institutions and encourage active civic and political engagement.

AS#1 School Students Complete Canoe for Inaugural Boat Launch

At a Glance: Under the direction of master canoe carver, Saaduuts, AS#1 students have finished building a Haida canoe from a 40-foot, 750 year old red cedar log. Students at the K-8 school spent the past three years carving, sanding and painting the canoe in preparation for its final journey to Prince of Wales Island, Alaska, where it will be gifted to the Haida tribe. Saaduuts and the AS#1 students have chosen Golden Gardens Park as the site for the first test paddle in open water. After the inaugural canoe launch, students will present the canoe to the School Board to celebrate its completion. The canoe, carving tools and handmade gifts for the Haida tribe, including 400 woven bracelets, will be on display at the John Stanford Center for Educational Excellence until March 17.

Madrona School Kicks Off Neighborhood and School Appreciation Day

At a Glance: To celebrate the success of the new Madrona School building and the improvements to the playfield, the school community will host a Neighborhood and School Appreciation Day. Madrona neighborhood residents are encouraged to join in the festivities, which will include cupcakes and coffee from Cupcake Royale.

Maple School Elementary School Teacher Appointed to
Scholastic Books National Teacher Advisory Board

At a Glance: Maple Elementary teacher Diane Trudnowski has been invited to serve on the National Teacher Advisory Board for Scholastic Books, the world's largest publisher of children's books. The 39 member board is made up of three representatives from each grade level, K-12, that the company selects from a national application process. Members of the advisory board provide feedback on current school and classroom developments to the Scholastic Book team of editors, marketers and designers. Ms. Trudnowski will represent the second grade and will travel to New York for training February 27 to February 29.
