Voters Reinvest in Educating
Seattle's Children
Unofficial Results Show Strong Support for District
Levies
Seattle's voters showed overwhelming support
yesterday for the renewal of two school district levies, according
to unofficial election returns.
“On behalf of the 47,000 students served in
Seattle Public Schools, I want to express my deepest gratitude to
Seattle voters,” said Superintendent Raj Manhas. “Your
decision helps ensure a brighter tomorrow – for our children,
for our schools, and for our city.”
Unofficial
returns showed the Educational Programs and Operations levy
(EP&O) winning support from 78 percent of voters, and the
Capital levy garnering support from 74 percent of voters.
“These results send a resounding message to the children of
our city,” Manhas said. “In supporting these levies,
voters are telling our students that we care about you, that we
value your education, and that we are willing to invest in your
future.”
The $338 million
EP&O levy represents 23 percent of the District's general
fund and pays for important educational services, including lower
class size, instructional programs, technology support, and a
variety of student activities. The $178 million
capital levy funds 700 projects, improving every school in the
system and ensuring a safe, secure learning environment for every
student. Repairs and upgrades will be made to roofs, life safety
and mechanical systems; to library, science and art facilities; and
to technology systems and equipment that support teaching and
learning.
“On behalf of the School Board, I want to
extend my heartfelt thanks to Seattle voters who, once again,
demonstrated their undying commitment to public education,”
said Board President Mary Bass. “It affirms our belief that
we are moving in the right direction.”
The Board President, together with the
Superintendent, extended an extra special thank you to Schools
First and the incredible corps of volunteers – staff members
and parents chief among them -- who tirelessly worked to ensure
passage of the levies – and success for Seattle's
students.
