GENERAL
Will the
District be making changes to how it provides
transportation?
One of the goals of the new assignment plan is to
reduce transportation costs. For that reason, we have designed the
new student assignment plan to not only improve access to services
closer to where students live, but also to streamline our current
extensive transportation program to achieve cost
savings.
Will students
attending schools outside their service areas still receive
transportation?
During the transition to the full implementation
of new student assignment plan, some school bus transportation will
be provided for a period of time to those attending schools outside
their service areas. The provision of this transportation will be
specified in the transition plan.
What
transportation is available for attendance area school
students?
For elementary students who live outside the
school’s approved walk zone, school bus transportation is
provided to the attendance area school and to any other K-5 or K-8
school in the student’s service area.
For middle-school students who live outside the
school’s approved walk zone, school bus transportation is
provided to the attendance area school and to any other K-5 or K-8
school in the service area. Transportation will also be provided to
a linked service area if necessary to provide access to an option
school. A bus pass for Metro transportation is provided for middle
school students to an attendance area school or option school
located outside of their service area.
For high school students who live outside the
school’s approved walk zone, a bus pass for Metro
transportation is provided for high school students.
Was walking
distance factored into the new assignment plan and, if so, what
distance was considered walking distance?
Safe walk zones were considered as one of the non-weighted factors
of the new student assignment plan. The City of Seattle School
Traffic Safety Advisory Committee, which includes the Seattle
Public Schools’ Risk Manager, establishes approved walk zones
and recommended walking routes. This information is used in
determining transportation eligibility in Seattle Public Schools
Walk areas for individual schools are available on line at
