Frequently Asked Questions -
Implementation
|
|
What is the
timeline for implementing this plan?
The transition to a fully implemented plan will
start in the 2010-11 school year for students in entry-grade
students, usually those in grades K, 6, and 9.
Top
Will the plan be
implemented all at once or in phases?
It will be implemented in phases as part of a
transition plan. The transition plan will be developed after the
new attendance boundaries are approved by the Board.
Top
Will students
currently enrolled at non-attendance area schools receive an
assignment to their attendance area school
immediately?
No. Current students are not guaranteed immediate
assignment to their new attendance area school. The shift to
automatic assignment to attendance area
schools—other than for entry grade
students will be determined by the transition plan. This transition
plan will be developed after the Board approves new attendance area
boundaries.

If a student
is a young kindergartner—that is, born after September
1—will their assignments be processed in the same way as
those kindergartners who are older?
Yes, all incoming kindergarteners will be treated
the same: they will be assigned to their attendance area school
based on their address.

When will
school tours be conducted?
School tours will be scheduled before the Open
Enrollment period in March. A schedule of open houses and
tours will be available online and communicated to families in a
variety of ways.
Top
Does this plan
apply to non-resident students?
No. Residents of other school districts can apply
to seek admission into the district, but enrollment of
non-residents is subject to different School Board Policy and
Procedures as a matter of law. More information on
non-resident enrollment can be found at
http://www.seattleschools.org/area/eso/nonresidentstudents.xml.
Top
Will the City of
Seattle continue to play a role in walk zones?
The City of Seattle School Traffic Safety
Advisory Committee is charged with recommending safe walking routes
and there are no plans for that to change. These factors are
taken into consideration in determining boundaries.
Top
Will this plan
balance high school enrollment?
Because high school buildings vary in
size—and the services they provide vary with their
populations—it is impossible for each school to house the
same number of students. However, this plan applies the same
capacity standards to all high schools.
Top
If my new
attendance area school requires uniforms, will I have to pay for
one?
It is a school-based decision as to whether
students will wear uniforms. In a situation where purchasing a
uniform is a hardship for a family, schools work with families and
the community to find solutions.
Top
If my new
attendance area school charges a fee for full-day kindergarten,
will I have to pay for it?
The Washington Legislature has considered the
issue of funding full-day kindergarten for all students for the
last two years. Fees for full-day kindergarten will be revisited as
part of the transition plan, considering any changes in funding
available for full-day kindergarten.
