Frequently Asked Questions -
Enrollment Process
|
|
With the approval of the new student assignment
plan by the Board, a transition plan will be developed to achieve
its implementation. The answers to the questions in this FAQ
reflect a complete implementation of the new student
assignment plan. We will implement this plan in phases, beginning
in the 2010-11 school year. For that reason, everything in this
plan will not be in effect immediately.
How do I enroll my
child for school under this plan?
When fully implemented, a family simply needs to
register their school aged child. Using a set of updated attendance
area boundaries, we will assign that child to their attendance area
school based on their residence address and service needs. Once
a child is enrolled, and remains in the same attendance area, the
family does not need to apply again unless they want to seek an
assignment for their student at a different school.

When will the
updated student assignment boundaries be finalized?
The next step in that process is the creation of
a new set of attendance area boundaries maps. These maps will be
presented to the School Board on October 6, 2009. We have created
multiple opportunities for consulting with and informing the
community about these new boundary maps. For a complete list,
including community meetings, please click here. You can
also submit comments via e-mail and postal
mail.
After reviewing these comments, we will submit
the boundary maps—including any revisions—to the School
Board on November 4, 2009 for a vote on November 18,
2009.

What if my
child’s assigned area school is overenrolled?
Attendance area boundaries will be drawn to align
with the student population of an area and the capacity of the
schools in that area. We are also developing a capacity-management
policy that will provide for a regular review of attendance area
boundaries and facility capacities to better plan for changes in
enrollment and demographics over time.
However, it is important to note that this will not occur all at
once. Since current students will be grandfathered to stay at their
current school, the assignment of non-entry-grade students to the
attendance area
school will be determined by the transition plan.

What is a valid
address for enrollment?
In general, a valid address is one where a family
can prove that a student spends the majority of their residential
time. There are a number of ways that a family can provide
this proof, including current utility bills; insurance documents;
or documents from public agencies, such as the courts or the
Washington State Department of Social and Health Services
(DSHS).

Will a
childcare/relative address be valid for
enrollment?
No. A student’s address for the
purposes of enrollment is where they actually live, not a day care
or a parent’s business address. However, families can
apply for a child to attend school anywhere in the district,
including in the area in which childcare is provided. The
initial assignment will be to the attendance area school, and
assignment to another school depends on space
availability.

How are students
who are homeless assigned?

with the provisions of federal law.

When is Open
Enrollment period?
The Open Enrollment period for the 2010-11 school
is March of 2010. However, entry grade
students will know their assignments earlier, probably in late
February.
