Frequently Asked Questions - Bilingual Education

How will this plan support bilingual education for elementary students?

If an attendance area school has enough students requiring bilingual services, the student will be served at their attendance area school; if the school has only a small number of students requiring bilingual services,  the students will be served at a linked elementary school in their service area or an elementary school in a linked service area.

Elementary newcomer bilingual students who need elementary Bilingual Orientation Center services will be served at one of the schools in their service area or linked service area.

How does this plan support bilingual education for middle and high school students?

Middle and high school students who are not newcomers will be served in their attendance area schools. Middle and high school newcomer bilingual students who need Bilingual Orientation Center services will be served in their attendance area schools after exiting from the Secondary Bilingual Orientation Center (SBOC).

What if the bilingual education services my student needs are not available at our attendance area school?

If the required bilingual services a student needs are not available at the student’s attendance area school, these services will be provided at another “linked” attendance area school within the student’s service area. This provides predictable school assignments for students receiving bilingual services.

Do students have any other bilingual education options?

Yes. They can apply to other attendance area schools and option schools. To apply to a school that does not offer bilingual services, however, they must first waive bilingual services.
