Adult Literacy Program in Spanish

Sponsored by the Consulate of Mexico in Seattle and the Mexican Institute for Adult Education

Seattle Public Schools, in cooperation with the Consulate of Mexico in Seattle and the Institute for Adult Education in Mexico, is offering basic adult literacy and primary and secondary school classes in Spanish to individuals who would like to continue their education. Students have the opportunity to acquire skills to improve their lives, increase their self-confidence, support their children in school, and provide a foundation for literacy in English.

About the program
  • Classes and materials are free. The Mexican government provides the materials.
  • All instruction and materials are in Spanish.
  • Instruction is self-paced, flexible, and supportive to meet the needs of working and migrant adults.
  • Classroom instructors are native speakers of Spanish. They guide students through the materials, answer questions, and help students achieve at their own rate.
  • Classes are held twice a week in the evening.
  • Students who complete the course work and pass the exams can receive Primary and Secondary Certificates from the Mexican government.

Requirements
Participants must be Spanish speaking and at least 15 years old. The classes are for all Spanish speakers—they do not have to be from Mexico.

Classes are held at the following two locations in Seattle. Students who miss class at one location can go to the other location for assistance.

Concord Elementary School (in the South Park neighborhood)

There is open, ongoing enrollment at both sites. Register at either location during regular class time.

Students who want to register for primary or secondary level classes need to complete a diagnostic evaluation, which determines which level (grade) they will begin in.
