Adaptations and Modifications for Students
with Disabilities:
These adaptations and modifications were designed to assist
special education teachers with collaborating with general
education teachers on including students with disabilities in
general education classrooms. They can also be useful for general
education teachers who need ideas for including unassisted students
(such as students who are not diagnosed with a specific disability
but might exhibit some behavior or learning problems, or new
students who are in the process of receiving an Individual
Education Plan). If you suspect you have a student in your class
with a disability that is not diagnosed, you should use the school
district's process for identifying these students; these
adaptations are not intended to replace special education services,
but to assist both general education and special education teachers
with using Investigations with a variety of students.
These are merely suggestions, and as each
student is unique, teachers may want to review each of the
different disability sections for ideas on different ways to adapt
each specific part of the lesson.
Any of these adaptations can be used
interchangeably with varying disabilities; they are not limited to
the disability under which they are listed.
