The Math program is working to align elementary and middle school adopted materials with the new mathematics standards. In addition to updating pacing and instructional guides, this work includes alignment of assessments and learning targets to the new standards, and developing models for effective mathematics teaching through use of High Leverage teaching practices and differentiation activities.

Elementary Mathematics

  • Two of three Collaborative Workshops for teachers of English Language Learners and Special Education students have been completed, through which teachers develop strategies to support the learning and achievement of their students. Teachers apply mathematics content development, lesson planning, use of algorithms, consideration of mathematics through the lenses of student thinking, and examination of student and teacher culture to their study of how to best impact student learning.
  • Three of four Teacher Leader and school partner trainings have been completed. These sessions, led by primary and intermediate teachers, bring the staff of two schools together to build math content and standards knowledge, learn and practice High Leverage teaching practices, use the posted pacing and instructional guides, promote student reasoning, build student use of EDM algorithms, integrate EDM lessons with
  • Singapore practice problems, and use videotapes of elementary math classrooms to promote student and teacher learning.
  • Singapore Practice Supplements have been aligned to EDM lessons, and are posted for teachers’ use.
  • EDM assessments have been aligned the new standards (grades 1 – 5), as have EDM games (for procedural proficiency).
  • WASL release items have been aligned with EDM lessons to promote problem solving.
  • Baseline district math assessments have been aligned to the new standards and revised based on fall feedback. Winter assessments were given in all elementary schools and reports submitted to the Assessment department.

Middle School Mathematics

  • Middle school mathematics teachers, administrators, support staff, coaches, and consultants are engaged four times per year in a series of lab classroom experiences through Studio Days. Participants deepen their mathematics content knowledge, application of CMP2 lessons and use of High Leverage Practices through group planning, teaching/observation of lessons, and debriefing of lessons. The Studio Days sessions, operating at seven different schools, include lab sessions for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math, along with sessions focused on English Language Learners, Special Education students, and Advanced Learning students. The next Studio Days sessions will take place in February, followed by the last set of sessions in May.
  • Middle school pacing and implementation guides are being modified to align with the new state standards and coaches are meeting together to write supplemental lessons that will align with CMP2 units and the new standards. 60% of these supplemental lessons will be completed by the end of February.

High School Mathematics

Phase One of the K – 12 Mathematics/Science Alignment Project includes the adoption of high school mathematics materials. The adoption process is on schedule. The "Core" committee, made up of 18 teachers, school staff, and parents is reviewing materials for grades 9 – 11, and the "Advanced" committee is reviewing materials for Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus, and AP Statistics.

  • Each committee has identified its top choices, based on established criteria.
  • Public Review of the materials will take place from February 9 – 27, 2009, Monday – Friday, from 7 am – 8 pm at the John Stanford Center in the library. During this time, the committee will make site visits to see the top three materials being used in classrooms, and the Math Program Manager will conduct student focus groups at five high schools.
  • Final committee selections will take place in March (March 12 for the Core committee; March 17 for the Advanced committee).
  • A School Board vote on the proposed selections is set for April 22, 2009.
