The
Superintendent Raj Manhas
Scholarship was created by his colleagues upon his
retirement to honor the four years he served as Superintendent of
Seattle Public Schools (2003-2007). This award reflects
Superintendent Manhas' personal and educational background. Mr.
Manhas, a native of India, rose from humble beginnings to earn two
degrees in engineering. Following his master's degree from the
University of Washington, he worked in business, government and
education. Hence, students planning to study science or engineering
will be given special consideration in the award selection
process.
Applicants will meet
and provide evidence of the following criteria as part of his/her
application:
- Graduating in June
2008 from Seattle Public Schools
- Minimum GPA of 3.50 as
shown by transcript
- Fluency in two or more
languages
- Acceptance and planned
enrollment at a four-year institution
- Financial
need
- Two
letters of recommendation from non-relatives. One must be from a
Seattle Public Schools teacher, counselor or principal.
- Submission of a
300-400 word essay describing why she/he qualifies for and deserves
this scholarship to help meet future plans.
- Agree to photograph
and publicity following scholarship award.
The
winner will receive the Superintendent Raj Manhas Scholarship at
his/her high school's scholarship award ceremonies in May/June.
Funds will be sent to the college/university being
attended.
