Protocol for
Literature Circle

In order to focus the conversation around the articles, video or data input from Part 2 use the Literature Circle approach to engage teachers in dialogue on these three guiding questions.

Preparation:
· Grouping Strategy, such as Seasonal Partners, Random Numbering, etc.
· Copy of questions – each question written on large sheet of paper, posted
on the wall. These charts will be completed in Part 5 of the Lesson Plan.

Getting Started:
· Use a grouping strategy to organize participants into 3 –4 groups.
· Provide directions for Literature Circle

Participating in a Literature Circle: Total Time: 45 min – 50 minutes

Step 1: Engagement (3 min)
Individually: Select a passage or aspect of the article you read, or the video you watched or the data analyzed that resonates with you personally. Think about this question: What makes your selection personally significant? Hold on to these thoughts/feelings as you participate with colleagues throughout this part of the Courageous Conversations sessions.

Step 2: Interactive Conversation (15 min) In Triads: Instruct participants to connect with a partner or work in triads, based on a pre-determined grouping strategy. Each group will discuss Questions #1: How can we increase rigor or challenge in our classrooms?

Step 3: Conversation continues. (15 min)Re-group participants in Grade Level Teams or some other grouping so that staff members are working in a different group than the first one.
In Grade Level Teams: Discuss Question #2: How can we deepen our relationships with students (caring)?

Step 4: Conversation continues. (15 min)
Again, form one more grouping of participants that is different than Step 2, such as Grade Band groups or Subject Area groups.
In Grade Bands: Discuss Question #3: How can we make instruction and content more relevant to more students (connections)?

Note to facilitator:
At the end of the 45 minutes, be sure to direct participant to be ready to share their insights with the total group. See Part 5 in the Facilitation Guide/Lesson Plan.
