Family Involvement in Seattle Public Schools

Welcome Community Members!

Funding was made available to organizations that serve high-need populations through a competitive process. Five community-based organizations have received grants to provide culturally relevant, family involvement services to grant recipient schools. School representatives, the City of Seattle, and the Office of Family and Community Partnerships worked together to create this grant process. Organizations are:

Neighborhood House Description

For 100 years, Neighborhood House (NH) has been providing a broad range of education and social services to Seattle and King County’s low income, immigrant and refugee communities. Our mission is to help diverse communities of people with limited resources attain their goals for self-sufficiency, financial independence and community building.

We have a diverse and culturally competent staff of 120. With education and community connections as priorities, we provide early childhood education, youth tutoring, ESL/Citizenship, first language case management, employment and job training and community health education programs. We partner with families to provide first language home visits, consultation, and workshops to help parents decode the school system. We also work one-on-one with families to connect with bilingual support in the school or facilitate access to other academic or social resources.

Catholic Community Services’ Youth Tutoring Program Description

The Youth Tutoring Program’s mission is to tutor, guide and inspire at-risk youth living in public housing to achieve academic success. We create a challenging, safe, and enriching environment where youth are matched with adults who offer academic support and mentoring throughout their school years. We partner with parents and advocate for students in their schools and in their communities.

YTP serves over 500 youth each year in six tutoring centers located in the low-income public housing communities of Cedarvale Village, High Point, Jackson Park Village, Rainier Vista, Yesler Terrace and the mixed-income community of New Holly. For 15 years, YTP has provided a culturally relevant program that has been highly successful in producing positive results in students’ school performance. An integral component of our program is our focus on connecting family and school; our highly qualified staff is experienced at reaching out to families as well as facilitating relationships between families and their children’s schools in order to improve academic achievement. Home visits by YTP staff, multi-language parent feedback forms (Oromo, Amharic, Tigrinia, Somali, Vietnamese, Cambodian), liaison with other community organization’s multi-lingual staff, regular contact with school counselors and teachers, and presence at community events are just a few of the ways that YTP reaches out to families in order to connect them with their children’s schools.

Refugee Women’s Alliance (ReWA) Description

Refugee Women’s Alliance is a nonprofit, multiethnic organization that promotes inclusion, independence, personal leadership and strong communities by providing refugee and immigrant women and families with culturally and linguistically appropriate services. ReWA advocates for social justice, public policy changes and equal access to services while respecting cultural values and the right to self-determination.

ReWa fundamentally believes that all individuals have valuable strengths and assets to share, and thus all our programs and services are built not only on mutual respect, but also mutual learning. ReWA has been a “cultural broker” between mainstream society and refugee and immigrant communities in the City of Seattle, and King and Snohomish counties, for twenty-one years. As a multicultural agency, ReWA uniquely has the language and cultural capacity to serve children and families from all over the world, and to provide a bridge of understanding between them and their new community. Our 74 staff members speak 25 languages and dialects and come from the very communities we serve. Daily, they work side by side with families helping them to establish their lives in their new adoptive country.
