Career Services

Career information and resources

  1. Consult with the Career Center Specialist (CCS). Teachers may schedule the CCS to work with the class on a career curriculum that meets class / teacher’s needs and an orientation to the career center as related to career information
  2. Encourage students to visit career center before school, during lunch, after school, and (with permission slip) during class time
  3. Attend career seminars in the career center
  4. Arrange for a career seminar for a specific career pathway as it relates to class curriculum
  5. Attend Career Fairs planned by the CCS.

College Information

  1. Consult with the Career Center Specialist (CCS). Teachers may schedule the CCS to orient students to college materials and services available to students in the career center.
  2. Listen to school bulletin or look at Career Center announcements for college visits. Sign-up for college seminars scheduled in the Career Center.
  3. Attend off-site college presentations as desired.
  4. Research colleges and college related topics using the wide variety of resources and materials available in the career center in hard copy form or on-line.
  5. Encourage students to attend College Fais on campus or sign up for field trips arranged by the CCS to the National College Fair or a College Fair at a community college campus.

Career Interest Surveys

  1. Consult with Career Center Specialist (CCS). Teachers may schedule the CCS to administer one of several career interest assessments / inventories available in the career center. Follow-up activities such as researching a variety of occupations could also be scheduled in the career center. Remind students that they may schedule a career interest survey independently with the CCS to meet their own needs.
  2. As students mature and change during high school, a variety of interest assessments could be administered during the 9th, 10th and 11th grades.

Financial Aid Forms and Assistance

  1. Financial Aid forms are available in the career center as soon as the federal government distributes them.
  2. Seminars with representatives from 4-year colleges and 2-year colleges are scheduled in the career center to help students complete the FAFSA.
  3. Remind students that they can complete the FAFSA on-line in the career center

  1. The CCS is available to help students complete college applications.
  2. Resources are available in the career center to help students write their college essays.
  3. Remind students that they can fill and submit applications on-line in the career center.

Job search skills

  1. Resource materials are available to assist students with job search skills.
  2. The CCS is available to work with individual students or with classrooms on employment skills including cover letters, applications, and interviews.

Service Learning opportunities

  1. Volunteer opportunities are posted in the career center and publicized in the school bulletin by the CCS.
  2. Seminars with organizations recruiting for service learning opportunities may be hosted in the career center.

Seminars with college representatives

  1. The CCS is contacted by college reps to schedule seminars in the building while they are in Seattle.
  2. The CCS publicize seminars, signs up students, and hosts the seminars.
  3. College visits held off-campus are publicized by the CCS.
  4. The CCS arranges field trips to College Fairs.

Career seminars

  1. The CCS schedules career seminars in conjunction with the Learning for Life program.
  2. Students or teachers schedule career seminars, if there is a demand.
  3. Membership Organizations contact the CCS and offer to participate in a career seminar. If there is student interest, the career center will host it.
  4. Career Fairs are planned and coordinated by the CCS on a rotating schedule

Military Recruitment

  1. The CCS schedule recruiters from the armed services to present information to students as a seminar or information table.
  2. The CCS publicizes the schedule.

Community programs, field trip coordination and recruitment

  1. The CCS will publicize events that are of interest to students.
  2. If transportation is available to the event, the CCS will arrange for a field trip. This entails signing up students, collecting parent permission slips, and chaperoning the students to the event.
  3. The CCS recruits students for organizations who sponsor events / activities that are open to students. Recruitment might entail collecting and submitting applications or hosting meetings in the career center.

Tech Prep Services

1. The CCS works with Career Technical Educators to present information on Tech Prep enrollment to students.

2. At the beginning of the semester the CCS or CTE teacher informs the students about Tech Prep credits, how to qualify, and how to enroll.

4. Towards the end of the semester, the CCS visits Tech Prep classes with an enrollment form for students who might possibly qualify for Tech Prep credit. Students turn in the completed Tech Prep enrollment form along with a $15.00 check to the CCS who submits the forms and checks to the Tech Prep Office.

ASVAB

1. The CCS schedules the ASVAB test for the building, which is administered by the military representative.

2. The CCS may help students interpret/understand the results.

City Campus and recruitment for other special interest classes

  1. The CCS publicizes City Campus classes, collect and submit City Campus applications to the Dept. of Career and Technical Education.
  2. The CCS serves as liaison for City Campus and the Dept. of CTE. They submit City Campus attendance to the registrar and contact students when needed during the school day.
  3. The Career Center is a regular meeting site for Transition Success and Career Ladders. The CCS publicizes these meetings and facilitates student attendance.
