Course Title:  13th Year Portfolio

This course gives either Occupational Education credit or Language Arts credit.

13th Year Portfolio is designed to help students make the transition from high school to college and to work.  The first section focuses on researching colleges, selecting colleges that are attractive to the student, and applying to the students’ top choices.  The application process includes self-assessment, essay writing, time management, and project management issues.  The second section of the course deals with finding, applying for, and keeping a job.  The course touches on issues of financial management, taxes, insurance, and housing.

Course Title: Accounting I, II, III, & IV

This course is part of the Academy of Finance.

Accounting provides an overview of the complete accounting process. Students work through the accounting cycle, first in a service business for a sole proprietorship and then in a merchandising business for a partnership.  Financial statements are prepared. A business simulation set is used to enable students to combine all basic accounting practices in one specific business.

Accounting II continues to study the bookkeeping cycle, financial statements, corporation, and accounting systems with special journals. Sales taxes, income taxes, payroll, bad debts, depreciation, notes, interest, petty cash, and accruals are introduced.

Accounting III and IV are extensions of Accounting I and Accounting II and are intended for those students who plan to enter a vocation centered around bookkeeping and accounting.

Course Title: All About Business

This course is designed to help students attain the basic skills and knowledge necessary for understanding the world of business and preparing for employment in the business world. Course Title: Banking and Credit

This course is part of the Academy of Finance.

This course presents a comprehensive view of the principles and practices of banking and credit in the United States. The students become familiar with the major functions of banks and other financial intermediaries, in-house operations and procedures, central banking by the Federal Reserve System and modern trends in the banking industry. The credit component provides an understanding of credit functions and operations as practiced by commercial lending institutions. The students are introduced to the principles of credit risk evaluation, loan creation and debt collection.

This course studies legal principles and practices applied to business situations and transactions. The topics covered are of importance to all citizens, not just business people. Laws of contracts are basic to Business Law including contracts of employment, sales, property, insurance, negotiable instruments, bailment, and marriage.

Business Law II studies in greater depth the principles and practices learned in Business Law I. The student will demonstrate skills and attitudes that contribute to safe living and working conditions. This course is part of the Academy of Finance.

Through a survey of basic topics in Macro and Micro economics the student develops an understanding of how our mixed market economy works. n addition, there are units on production and sales, money credit and banking, economic growth and stability, taxation and budgeting, labor management relations and international trade. An emphasis on capital markets helps the students to understand the role that various types of markets and securities play in our overall economic framework.
