Complete Renovation & Safety Upgrades

Nathan Hale High School

Project Highlights

  • New 14,000 sf addition housing the library, 2 visual arts classrooms, a weight room and a new east facing lobby connecting the school building and the athletic fields.
  • Renovation of approximately 75% of the existing school with major improvements focused on the academic core
  • Exciting new sustainable features
  • Two added classrooms and one additional science lab
  • Creation of multiple small group learning areas within academic core to support the educational program
  • Expanded student commons with a brand new kitchen and servery
  • A new forum located at the heart of the academic core to support team-teaching opportunities and visual projection
  • Administration and student services will be remodeled and consolidated
  • Enhanced daylighting from skylights and enlarged exterior windows
  • New landscaping and site improvements
  • Newly landscaped courtyards with improved pedestrian safety and access
  • Storm water detention for all new building area
  • New synthetic turf field
  • All new double pane windows, insulation and heating system throughout
  • All new flooring, paint and ceiling treatment throughout
  • All new lighting, alarm and security system throughout
  • Code compliant seismic upgrades throughout
  • All new furniture, whiteboards and provision for smart boards throughout
  • Brand new science lab furniture and equipment
  • All new mechanical and electrical systems throughout
  • New fire sprinkler system
  • Demolition of the existing chimney stack and the existing library addition
  • Demolition of all existing portables (except for day care)
  • Remove approximately 10,000 square feet of impervious surface and improve drainage for storm water management

Project Sustainable Features

  • Re-use of existing building shell and roof
  • 50% to 75% waste reduction during demolition
  • 20% to 30% reduction in potable water use
  • Fan-assisted natural ventilation system in the academic core with night purge cycle for pre-cooling in the summer months
  • 100% of teaching spaces have access to natural light and views
  • Low voc finishes and non ozone-depleting substances will be specified
  • Native planting restoration for 400 feet of the south branch of Thornton Creek
  • Net decrease of 10,000 square feet of impervious surface
  • Adding insulation and new energy-efficient exterior glazing
  • User-operated exterior windows, ceiling fans and mechanical controls for individualized thermal comfort
  • New mechanical controls system
  • New lighting controls system with daylight and occupancy sensors
  • New storm water retention system for new impervious surfaces

Construction Mitigation Measures

  • No academic programs are planned to be moved off-site or canceled during construction
  • Hazardous materials abatement will occur during the summer or within negatively pressurized containment areas with continuous air quality monitoring
  • Temporary partitions will separate construction areas from occupied areas
  • Most high noise and vibration activities will be limited to non-school hours
  • Code compliant emergency egress will be maintained
  • Temporary fences will separate construction areas on site
  • Contractor access will be limited and controlled with separate gates and entrances
  • Contractors will undergo background checks and wear id badges at all times
  • Mechanical and electrical service will be maintained during construction
  • School administration will work with the Contractors to minimize impact
