Building Excellence III
The Building Excellence III (BEX III) Capital Bond continues to
work to replace or modernize district buildings, infrastructure and
technology. The six year, $490 million bond replaces the expiring
BEX II levy, which was approved in 2001.
More than a third of the 100 buildings in the District's current
inventory are over 50 years old. A total of 24 schools will have
been renovated or replaced between 1998 and 2008, funded by the BEX I and BEX II levies. These projects
were completed based on the best practices in academics,
construction, and the environment. In addition, 12 properties have
been or will be sold. This leaves 37 buildings that were
constructed before 1957. Many are in poor condition, have outdated
and problematic plumbing, heating and ventilating systems,
detriorated interior and exterior finishes, and limited flexibility
to meet future education demands.
