Standard (Curriculum)

Instruction and Assessment

Standard 1. The student understands and applies visual arts knowledge and skills

1.1 Explains and applies the concepts of art using visual arts vocabulary
Elements
* Identifies and mixes complementary colors to form neutrals
* Identifies and uses warm/cool colors as advancing and receding in space
* Identifies and uses form and texture in 2D and 3D art forms
Principles of Organization (Design)
* Uses movement of the viewers eye within a composition
* Differentiates between realistic, non-objective, and abstract works of art

1.2 Explains and develops visual arts skills and techniques
* Understands and demonstrates gradations of value both in neutrals and in colors
* Uses a wide variety of media singularly and in combination

1.3 Understands, identifies, and uses visual arts styles from various artists, cultures, and times
* Identifies techniques from various artists, cultures, and/or times

1.4 Demonstrates audience skills in a variety of visual arts settings and performances
* Identifies how the audience and artist/performer interact

2.1 Develops and applies to work with instructor assistance using a creative process in the arts
* Conceptualizes that context or purpose
* Gathers information from diverse sources
* Develops ideas and techniques
* Organizes arts elements, forms, and/or principles into a creative work
* Reflects for the purpose of elaboration and self-evaluation
* Refines work based on feedback
* Presents work to others
* Applies arts concepts, vocabulary, skills, and techniques through a creative process

2.2 Understands performance processes in the arts
* Identifies audience and purpose
* Selects artistic work (repertoire) to perform
* Analyzes the structure and background or work
* Interpret by developing a personal approach to work
* Rehearse, adjust and refine through evaluation and problem-solving
* Present work for others; reflects, and evaluates
* Applies arts concepts, vocabulary, skills, and techniques through a performance process

2.3 Understands a responding process in the arts
* Engages actively and purposefully
* Describes what is seen and heard
* Analyzes how the elements are arranged and organized

3.3 Explains and applies personal aesthetic criteria to communicate artistic choices
* Describes how aesthetic choices are influenced by historical contact

* Uses emphasis in an artwork (e.g., to create a focal point)
* Creates realistic, non-objective, and abstract works of art

1.2 Explains and develops visual arts skills and techniques
* Uses spatial devices (e.g., one-point perspective
* Demonstrates the use of value and texture in drawing
* Uses exaggeration and simplification
* Presents work for display (e.g., centers, mounts/mats)

1.3 Understands, identifies, and uses visual arts styles from various artists, cultures, and times
* Applies techniques from various artists, cultures, and/or times
