Many Upcoming Opportunities for Teacher
Professional Development in the Arts
Last month, the Seattle Public
Schools Visual and Performing Department initiated a new
professional development process. Over the next several months,
arts specialists will come together in Professional Learning
Communities to determine key Grade-level Expectations and design
curriculum maps for their arts disciplines at the elementary and
secondary levels. At a kick-off meeting on October 28, Arts Corps
staff introduced the Creative Habits of Mind as a framework for the
curriculum mapping. This framework will help to highlight the
abilities that students gain through learning in the arts that are
in addition to the specific knowledge and skills of each arts
discipline. These are abilities that support students' learning
throughout their lives, such as being able to imagine
possibilities, think critically, have courage and take risks,
persist and have self-discipline, and reflect on their work.
In addition to collaborating as peers in Professional Learning
Communities, arts specialists have several new professional
development workshops from which to choose. Several of the
workshops are open all teachers and can help develop quality
teaching strategies in multiple content areas. See below for more
information about these cross-disciplinary workshops.
Registration for workshops occurring before
December 31, 2009 can be made at http://www.seattleschools.org/area/profdev/instructserv/curriculum_training.dxml#Arts.
Registration for workshops from January 1, 2010 until the end of
the school year will be online in a new Professional Development
registration system activated December 2009.

Partnership
Seattle Children's Theatre and Rainier Beach High School
Drama Department
About the
Seattle Children's Theatre (SCT) and Rainier Beach High School
(RBHS) partnership
Last spring, Karen Sharp, SCT's Education Director and Don
Fleming, Summer Season Producer at SCT conducted a week's worth of
workshops for Rainier Beach High School Students, to kick off the
beginning of an ongoing partnership and collaboration. This fall,
Don is directing a production of The Big Friendly Giant by David
Wood, adapted from the novel by Roald Dahl, at Rainier Beach High
School (See performance schedule and ticket information below.) The
students in the show are offering a special matinee performance for
Aki Kurose Middle School students on November 13
Students,
teachers and community arts organization educators are all involved
in this partnership, each contributing their talents and areas of
expertise. Seattle Theatre Group, which manages the Moore and
Paramount Theatre, is doing sound and lighting for the show, with
STG director of operations David Allen providing active
supervision, instruction and support to the students. During the
dynamic, exciting rehearsal process, RBHS students have developed a
?Giant Rap' to add to the show (with choreography by Kathryn Van
Meter, one of Seattle's best musical theatre choreographers), and
are stepping up to handle all aspects of the technical production,
from programs to computer light board programming, learning a wide
variety of practical skills. Brooke Linefsky, RBHS Drama Teacher,
is producing the show, assistant directing and overseeing props,
costumes and running crew. RBHS Technical Theatre teacher Richard
Ely is supervising set construction and design, and RBHS art
teacher Maggie Woiceck is designing and building amazing puppets
for the show.
Seattle Public
Schools is excited to consider this as a model partnership for
several reasons: the level of collaborative planning and work
between community partners and school staff that has occurred, the
ability of the school to expand its drama program offerings through
the partnership, and that partners are learning from each other in
a collegial manner that builds the teachers' capacities to provide
the best instruction for our students. Rainier Beach High School
looks forward to working with other community arts partners in the
future to further expand and strengthen the arts at the
school.

Audience: All teachers
Three clock hours available at $2 per hour
Registration available online by December 2009
This 3 hour discussion-based workshop
will provide an introduction to Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS)
www.visualthinkingstrategies.org , a student-centered,
research-based education method and curriculum that uses art to
build capacities to observe, think, listen, and communicate. VTS
teaches how to value one's own ideas, to listen to and build on
those of others. This method is based on 30 years of empirical
research by Harvard-trained cognitive psychologist Abigail Housen.
VTS has been field-tested with students who struggle to learn and
across languages and cultures.
VTS aligns with WA EALRS in Communication, Reading, and
Mathematics. VTS also supports High Leverage Teaching Moves:
Teachers learn effective facilitation strategies that help
encourage and develop skills such as careful listening, providing
evidence for interpretations and understanding multiple viewpoint
and ways of thinking.
This workshop will be at the Frye Art Museum www.fryemuseum.org

Free Talk - Children's Minds and
Imaginations
November 10, 2009 at 6:30-8
p.m.
University Child Development School, 5062 9th Avenue Northeast,
Seattle, WA 98105
In this talk, Kieran Egan, author of
The Future of Education: Reimagining Our Schools from the Ground
Up, will offer a rather new way of thinking about the process
of children's cognitive development which focuses on the kinds of
"cognitive tools" or learning toolkits students develop as they
grow up in a society like ours. In schools and in most currently
dominant psychological theories of development, short-shrift is
given to some of the most powerful learning tools students have
available to make sense of their world and experience. We tend also
to think of the imagination as something of an educational frill;
something to try to engage after the hard work of learning has
occurred. He will try to show that focusing on central features of
students learning "toolkits" makes it clear that the imagination is
one of the great workhorses of learning, and that we ignore it at
the cost of making learning more ineffective than it should be and
much schooling more tedious than it need be. For more information,

New Report - Anchoring Arts
Education: Principals' Arts Leadership
ArtsEd Washington has released the
results of an study examining the effectiveness of the
organization's Principals' Arts Leadership (PAL) program. In this
study, principals and teachers at many of the PAL schools reported
increased student engagement in the classroom and significantly
decreased behavioral issues throughout the school as a result of
the program. The PAL research indicated that empowering school
principals is a highly effective method to increase arts education
in the schools. For more information, visit: www.artsedwashington.org
New Report - Staying in School:
Arts Education and New York City High School Graduation
Rates
A Report by The Center for Arts
Education, October 2009.The report found that schools ranked in the
top third by graduation rates offered students the most access to
arts education and the opposite for the bottom third schools. Among
other findings, schools in the top third typically hired 40 percent
more certified arts teachers and offered 40 percent more classrooms
dedicated to coursework in the arts than bottom-ranked schools.
They were also more likely to offer students a chance to
participate in or attend arts activities and performances. The full
report can be downloaded as a PDF at: http://www.cae-nyc.org/sites/default/files/docs/CAE_Arts_and_Graduation_Report.pdf
On Demand Webinar from Americans for
the Arts - The Qualities of Quality: Excellence in Arts
Education and How to Achieve It
The report, The Qualities of Quality:
Excellence in Arts Education and How to Achieve It was commissioned
by The Wallace Foundation and conducted by Project Zero at the
Harvard Graduate School of Education.
The study focuses on the character of excellence itself and asks
three core questions:
- How do arts educators in the United
States-including leading practitioners, theorists, and
administrators-- conceive of and define high quality arts learning
and teaching?
- What markers of excellence do educators
and administrators look for in the actual activities of art
learning and teaching as they unfold in the classroom?
- How does a program's foundational
decisions, as well as its ongoing day-to-day decisions, impact the
pursuit and achievement of quality?
In this webinar, presenter Steve Seidel,
Director, Harvard Project Zero and Director, Arts in Education
Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education shares the
findings of this study and introduces some of the tools developed
by the research team for use by practitioners committed to
examining and improving the quality of the arts learning
experiences they provide for young people. http://eo2.commpartners.com/users/afta/session.php?id=1799

PTA Guides and Resources to Help Parents Support Arts
Education
As the PTA web site states: "Arts education not only cultivates
imagination, self-expression, and creativity, but also plays a
vital role in the development of critical thinking and
problem-solving skills. It promotes visual literacy, which enables
students to analyze and interpret the meaning of complex visual
imagery that permeates the media and popular culture." To support
this vision, the website offers PTA resources, programs,
publications, and position statements to bolster parent advocates
for the arts. http://www.pta.org/topic_arts_education.asp

Learn about the origins and philosophy of the BrainDance. After
experiencing the eight developmental movement patterns, humans move
through in the first year of life that wire the central nervous
system, you will have a new appreciation and deeper understanding
of how movement and the brain are linked. It is imperative that we
provide healthy and fun movement experiences that help to
counterbalance the increased time children are spending not moving
as they sit in front of computer, TV, video, and cell phone
screens. The BrainDance may be done in dance studios, classrooms,
gyms, and homes. Moving through these fundamental patterns at any
age may correct flaws in perceptual processing, enhance lifelong
learning, and integrate body and mind for optimal brain function.
Some benefits include improved alignment, connectivity, and
expressivity; brain oxygenation for clarity and focus; and
reorganization of the neurological system. Participants will also

We think of music as a form of art, but
it can be explained by science -- the science of sound! Join Museum
of Flight and EMP|SFM educators to learn how to teach students
about sound. Participants will first explore sound by using
activities from the FOSS (Full Option Science System) "Physics of
Sound" kit. Next, those scientific principles will be modeled using
the electric guitar through the "Science of Sound" EMP|SFM student
workshop. Participants will try out their skills on real electric
guitars, then examine the collection of historic guitars that
showcase how inventors engaged in "The Pursuit of Volume." All
participants receive copies of the Pursuit of Volume EMP|SFM

Funding Opportunities
|
 |
|
The following are some of the resources available
to schools, individual teachers and PTSAs seeking funding to
support arts education in the schools. Some of the grant
opportunities listed may not be "arts-specific," but the arts can
often address important educational issues such as closing the
achievement gap, creative teaching practices, leadership, peer
mentoring, community service, and parent engagement. We will
continue to highlight new sources each month as well as link you to
comprehensive lists or databases of grant opportunities.
Please note that all competitive grants and/or new grants must
receive prior approval from the SPS Chief Academic Officer and
designated staff, this also includes any requests for District
participation in grants developed by outside partnerships or
groups. Grants and grant proposals are reviewed each Monday.
Requests for review must be received at least one week prior to the
Monday meeting. Please contact Kevin Corrigan, Office of Fiscal
Compliance & Grants at kgcorrigan@seattleschools.org

Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation
www.mhopus.org/about-us.asp
The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation (MHOF) was inspired by the
acclaimed motion picture Mr. Holland's Opus, the story of the
profound effect a dedicated music teacher had on generations of
students. MHOF donates instruments to music programs where students
have access to a music curriculum but lack the resources and
support base to adequately keep up with equipment loss due to
attrition, depreciation and wear over time. An infusion of
instruments and repairs enables more students to participate and
experience a quality music education. Three types of grants are
available for K-12 school instrumental music programs with
financial need that take place during the school day; after-school
music programs; and outstanding student musicians enrolled in
grades 8-12 who cannot afford an appropriate instrument.
