Welcome!
We are very pleased to welcome you to the new monthly SPS Arts
eNews. We hope you find this a valuable resource for finding
engaging, quality arts opportunities. To more learn about the work
of the Arts Team and about the partnership with the City of
Seattle, you can now view the 5th Annual Mayor's Forum on the State
Arts Education in Seattle Public School which held on October 30,
2008 online at www.seattlechannel.org/videos/results.asp?Keyword=Arts+Education+Forum&SearchType=true
If you are school staff or parent in the Seattle Public Schools,
this eNews is your place to find educational arts opportunities in
the greater Seattle community. If you would like to share the news
of an arts event occurring at your school, such as a school
concert, performance, student art exhibition, we ask that you
contact the Seattle Public Schools' School Beat newsletter at goodnews@seattleschools.org.
If you are with a community arts organization and would like to
submit a program listing for this Arts eNews, you can find the
submission form at our website www.seattleschools.org/area/arts/newsletterinput.xml
Finding the
Right Program for You
Listings of programs, events and activities in the Arts eNews does
not equate to an endorsement by the Seattle Public Schools. We
encourage all potential program participants to assess how each
listing meets their needs, especially when establishing long term
partnerships. If you would like assistance in matching right
program for your school's needs, please feel to contact Community
Arts Liaison Kathleen Allen kpallen@seattleschools.org.
The listings below are submitted to SPS by the arts organizations
and any questions about the programs, events or activities should
be addressed directly to the organizations.
Each month we will also feature a partnership between an arts
organization and a school or schools, which exemplifies a
collaborative endeavor that enhances student and educator learning
in the arts over the long-term.

Partnership
Southeast Performing Arts
Initiative
The goal of SE
Performing Arts Initiative is to increase access to performing arts
opportunities for secondary schools in Southeast Seattle. Currently
this initiative is being implemented at Rainier Beach High School
with a partnership with Broadway Bound, a youth performing arts
organization. Broadway Bound has contracted with Seattle Theatre
Group, which owns and operates the Paramount and Moore Theatres, to
provide assistance with the technical theater aspects. The goal of
the Initiative is that the performing arts program will be based at
Rainier Beach High School but will expand in subsequent years to
serve Aki Kurose and elementary feeder schools. Utilizing the state
of the art RBHS Paul Robeson Performing Arts Theatre, Rainier Beach
students are being trained in many aspects of musical theatre
including: instrumental and vocal music, acting, dance, technical
theatre, and costuming. Opportunities to learn and gain skills in
performing arts occur during school and through after school and
summer programming. In the future, interdisciplinary planning and
instruction will ensure Rainier Beach's Performing Arts Program is
authentically connected and supporting the school's academic
priorities and that it is a school-wide initiative. Because of the
broad scope of this project and interdisciplinary focus the SE
Performing Arts Initiative will support learning and academic
achievement for all students.

Seattle Music Partners provides
after-school music lessons to elementary and middle school students
in underserved communities. Our mission is to help children learn
to play instruments and read music. To attain this goal, we recruit
accomplished high school and college-aged musicians to volunteer to
work with our students. Lessons are taught on a weekly basis in
one-on-one pairings or in small groups, and instruments are loaned
when needed. Students perform in several recitals each year,
showcasing their new skills and gaining valuable performance
experience. In addition, SMP works with area arts organizations to
bring nationally known musicians into the schools and to arrange
for field trips to music performances.

melodies of Joseph Achron recall folkloric elements of Russian
Jewish life, and Egon Lede?'s atmospheric salon pieces are a final
echo of a soon-to-be-lost Central European gentility. David Stock
offers a nostalgic reminiscence of shtetl life, while Lori
Laitman's song cycle conveys a poet's extraordinary ability to
express his humanity even in the Vilna ghetto.
