Welcome!
We are very pleased to welcome you to our first edition of the
monthly SPS Visual and Performing Arts eNews. We hope you find this
a valuable resource for finding engaging, quality arts
opportunities. If your organization would like to submit a program
listing, you can find the submission form at our web site http://www.seattleschools.org/area/arts/newsletterinput.xml.
Finding the
Right Program for You
Listings of programs, events and activities in the Arts eNews does
not equate to an endorsement by the Seattle Public Schools. We
encourage all potential program participants to assess how each
listing meets their needs, especially when establishing long term
partnerships. If you would like assistance in matching right
program for your school's needs, please feel to contact Community
Arts Liaison Kathleen Allen kpallen@seattleschools.org.
The listings below are submitted to SPS by the arts organizations
and any questions about the programs, events or activities should
be addressed directly to the organizations.
Each month we will also feature a partnership between an arts
organization and a school or schools, which exemplifies a
collaborative endeavor that enhances student and educator learning
in the arts over the long-term.

Whistlestop Dance Integration Project:
About The
Dance Integration Project
Seattle Public Schools wants to increase students' access to dance
education opportunities. When surveyed, Seattle Public Schools'
multiarts teachers overwhelming requested dance professional
development for 2008-09. Music teachers also expressed interest in
infusing dance into their curriculum. To address this need, the
Dance Integration Project has been developed by The
Whistlestop Dance Company. The goal of the Dance Integration
Project is to increase and enhance student learning in and
through dance. This program exemplifies a strong partnership
because it will involve cooperative planning between classroom
teachers and teaching artists, residencies by professional teaching
artists, development of a curriculum with classroom-based
assessment, and professional development. These components help
ensure that the teaching and learning of integrated dance and music
will continue even after this project is
completed
About The
Whistlestop Dance Company
Since 1976, Whistlestop has earned a reputation for excellence in
dance for audiences of all ages and abilities. Whistlestop received
the Dance Educators Association of Washington's 1996 Honor Award
for outstanding contribution to dance education in Washington
public schools. Whistlestop has developed many programs infusing
the arts with curriculum, such as Dancing Science, Dancing Math,
Dancing Poetry, World Dance, Dancing Times and Cultures, and
recently piloted the state's Dance Classroom-Based Performance
Assessments.
There is still
space available for this training. If you are an interested
multiarts or music specialist, please visit the SPS Visual and
Performing Arts Professional Development registration page at

Writers in the Schools (WITS), a program
of Seattle Arts & Lectures inspires young people to discover
and develop their authentic writing and performance voices. Through
working with professional, published creative writers, students are
empowered to tell their own stories. Writers-in-residence provide a
meaningful real-life mentor for every student from the motivated
learner to the reluctant writer and for each teacher. The
residencies are woven into the school day, thus reaching students
who might never elect to attend an after-school program in creative
writing. Through WITS, students become authors of their own
lives.

Seattle Music Partners provides
after-school music lessons to elementary and middle school students
in underserved communities. Our mission is to help children learn
to play instruments and read music. To attain this goal, we recruit
accomplished high school and college-aged musicians to volunteer to
work with our students. Lessons are taught on a weekly basis in
one-on-one pairings or in small groups, and instruments are loaned
when needed. Students perform in several recitals each year,
showcasing their new skills and gaining valuable performance
experience. In addition, SMP works with area arts organizations to
bring nationally known musicians into the schools and to arrange
for field trips to music performances.
