New Opportunities for the New School
Year
A new school year can mean new
opportunities to engage community arts programs that support your
schools' student learning as well as family and community
engagement goals. The Seattle Public School Arts eNews continues to
list a wide variety of arts education programs available throughout
the Seattle area. From school assembly performances to longer-term
project-based artist residencies to teacher professional
development, there are many resources that the arts community
provides to meet the needs of schools, students, and
teachers.
Each month the Arts eNews also features successful collaborative
programs between a school or schools and a community arts
organization. This month we learn about a program which has enabled
the art of film to come alive for students.
About the SPS Arts eNews
If you are school staff or parent in the Seattle Public Schools,
the Arts eNews is your place to find educational arts opportunities
in the greater Seattle community.
If you would like to share the news of an arts event occurring at
your school, such as a student concert, play, or art exhibition, we
ask that school staff submit a story to Seattle Public Schools'
School Beat newsletter. Stories could also include community arts
organization events happening at a school site or a performance
opportunity for Seattle Public School students occurring at a
professional arts venue. School Beat stories can be sent to goodnews@seattleschools.org.
If you work for a community arts organization and would like to
submit a program listing for this Arts eNews, you can find the
submission form at our website www.seattleschools.org/area/arts/newsletterinput.xml

Program for You
If you would like assistance in matching the right program to
support and enhance your students' learning, please contact
Community Arts Liaison Kathleen Allen kpallen@seattleschools.org.
We encourage all potential program participants to assess how a
program meets their needs, especially when establishing long-term
partnerships.
Please note, however, that listings of programs, events and
activities in the Arts eNews do not equate to an endorsement by
Seattle Public Schools. Specific questions about the programs
should be addressed directly to the sponsoring arts organization
that has provided SPS with program information.

SIFF FutureWave: Expanding Cinema Through
Education
SIFF FutureWave:
Expanding Cinema Through Education works with teachers to harness
the power of film within their classroom. During the 2009 Seattle
International Film Festival, 14 international filmmakers visited
classrooms around the Puget Sound including many to Seattle Public
Schools. More than 300 sophomores at Nathan Hale High School had
the opportunity to watch the award-winning documentary William
Kunstler: Disturbing The Universe and participate in a
post-screening Q&A with the director and daughter of the film's
subject, Emily Kunstler. Seeing and hearing the personal story of
William Kunstler gave students an insightful portrait of the
struggles of our recent history -- including issues of free speech,
prison rights, government abuse of power, and race -- and taught
them valuable skills in ethical decision-making, social activism,
and community organizing, so they are empowered to make their
voices heard.
About SIFF
Education programs for Students and Teachers
SIFF has also created a catalog of films to supplement content
areas, contemporary issues, and cross-cultural exploration. There
are several lesson plans and discussion guides that have already
been created, and we are open to communicating with teachers to
design a program of complete films or film clips that will spark
interest and discussion relating to their coursework. There are
also opportunities to bring local and visiting international film
professionals from a variety of creative backgrounds (directors,
costume designers, music composers, screenwriters, etc.) into
classrooms to expand real world application within most subject
areas. Visit www.siff.net or contact Dustin Kaspar at dustin.kaspar@siff.net for
more information and to receive the monthly e-newsletter
highlighting upcoming programs and student
opportunities.
To learn more
about how to use the power of film in your classroom, see below for
the description of an upcoming workshop presented by SIFF to all
Seattle Public School teachers.

Community Arts Organizations Share Engaging Teaching Strategies
- Professional Development Workshop Series
Throughout the year workshops will be presented in collaboration
with Seattle Public Schools and community arts organizations that
focus on teaching skill development across content areas and grade
levels. Acquire new skills and resources for your teaching "tool
box" that align with best-practice instructional frameworks such as
High Leverage Teaching Moves and Habits of Mind. The first workshop
in this series will unpack the power of film as a teaching
tool.
These workshops are open to all Seattle Public
School teachers and 3 clock hours are provided.
Harnessing
Film in Your Classroom: Using Historical Dramatization Across
Disciplines to Ignite Student Learning.
Tuesday, October 20, 2009, 4-7 p.m.
Location JSCEE 2750
Film is an art form that captures the attention of students yet it
is underutilized in expanding the breadth of cultural vision within
the school classroom. This multi-disciplinary art reaches across
subject matters to engage students, providing a shared emotional
experience to explore their own cultural perspectives. A
well-selected strategic film presentation (whether a complete film
or just a clip) provides a foundation to implement High Leverage
Teaching Moves, such as developing a clear teaching point,
fostering rich and engaging discourse, encouraging broad use of
vocabulary, and support student growth in critical thinking skills.
This professional development session will unearth creative ways
teachers are using film in their classes while also addressing the
parameters of educational use in copyright.
While this session is a co-presentation of the Arts and Social
Studies departments, it is intended to be accessible for
teachers of all subject matters. Film is a great way
to collaborate with other teachers, building a less
compartmentalized school culture and modeling real-world
application for students across the curriculum.
The session will be led by Dustin Kaspar who is a former high /
middle school educator who coordinates year-round film outreach and
curriculum enhancement for SIFF with Puget Sound area school
districts, including individual collaborations with classroom
teachers.

Report on Arts Activity in Seattle
Public Schools Now Available Online
Under the leadership of Dr.
Goodloe-Johnson and with support from the City of Seattle, that
Seattle Public Schools has undertaken the first district-wide needs
analysis survey as a part of an effort to revitalize arts education
in the schools. Data was gathered and analyzed in five areas: arts
instruction and activities; resources for arts teaching and
activities; barriers to the arts; policy and assessment; and
attitudes regarding the arts. The survey report provides a
high-level picture of arts instruction and access in SPS, with
attention to issues of equity.
To learn more about the survey conducted in fall 2008 and download
the full report and executive summary visit http://www.seattleschools.org/area/strategicplan/background_reviews.html
SPS Administrative Office Seeks Student Artwork for
Display
Brighten up the
John Stanford Center for Educational Excellence with student art
work from your school. All forms of two-dimensional art work are
welcome for display. Simply label the work with the student's name,
teacher, grade level and school and bring it to the JSCEE. Work
does not need to be specially mounted. Any school staff or parent
volunteer can drop off and pick up the work. Displays will last two
to three weeks and must be arranged in advance with Theresa Salmon,
SPS Logistics Project Administrator at tsalmon@seattleschools.org.
School Public Art Projects Need District
Review
Any projects in which art is installed
within the inside or outside of school facilities and which is done
by someone other than Seattle Public School staff, such as by an
artist-in-residence or by parent volunteers, needs to be reviewed
and approved by The Self Help Program of the SPS Facilities
Departments. For questions regarding project guidelines, contact
Gretchen DeDecker, Senior Facilities Planner at gdedecker@seattleschools.org
and visit http://www.seattleschools.org/area/facilities/SelfHelp/selfhelp.htm.
If you are school staff or community
member who wants to work with a community arts organization that
leads student public art projects to improve school facilities,
please contact Kathleen Allen, SPS Community Arts Liaison kpallen@seattleschools.org.

We think of music as a form of art, but
it can be explained by science -- the science of sound! Join Museum
of Flight and EMP|SFM educators to learn how to teach students
about sound. Participants will first explore sound by using
activities from the FOSS (Full Option Science System) "Physics of
Sound" kit. Next, those scientific principles will be modeled using
the electric guitar through the "Science of Sound" EMP|SFM student
workshop. Participants will try out their skills on real electric
guitars, then examine the collection of historic guitars that
showcase how inventors engaged in "The Pursuit of Volume." All
participants receive copies of the Pursuit of Volume EMP|SFM

This performance is an excellent
introduction to the Sicilian folk drama known as "Opera dei Pupi."
Based on a 17th century story written by Marie Catherine D'Aulnoy,
one of the more famous women authors to come out of the French
salons, the Carters give this tale a twist by using the influences
and style of the Renaissance epic, Orlando Furioso. Three-foot tall
hand-carved marionettes adorned in shining armor and lavish
costumes take the stage to the tunes of traditional Italian folk
songs. Performance supplemented with a Study Guide & visit to

The illustrious career of Alexander
Calder (1898-1976) spanned much of the 20th century. One of the
most acclaimed and influential sculptors of our time, Calder is

mathematical and engineering concepts like geometry and probability
while creating their own wire-based sculptures.

The Southeast Asia Center at the
University of Washington in collaboration with the Wing Luke Asian
Museum is very pleased to announce a special Saturday
teachers'workshop on Cambodia. Beginning in the 1980's, refugees
from the horrors of the Pol Pot regime began arriving in the Puget
Sound. Though now a vital part of our community, their story is not
well known. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the
ancient Khmer culture and its tragic recent history, and about
those in and out of the country who are looking to create a bright
future for themselves and their children. Educators who attend this
workshop will gain a better understanding of the history of
Cambodia and hear from leaders of Seattle's Cambodian-American
Community.
The program features a panel discussion with leaders of the Seattle
Cambodian-American Community a tour of exhibits at Wing Luke,
including a current one on Cambodia, and a project to take back to
the classroom. Teachers will enjoy a Cambodian lunch, leave with a
resource packet, have an opportunity to register to bring classes

The Metropolitan Opera hold auditions in
the fall of each year in 45 districts around the US and Canada.
Winners go to one of 17 regional auditions in the early winter.
Winners at the regional level go to New York to sing on the Met
stage for the finals. The goal is to find and boost careers of
students of singing who wish to go into opera. It gives other
students at any level interested in serious voice training and the
sheer beauty of hearing the cream of the aria repertory to hear
different styles and interpretations, sometimes of the same aria by
different singers. It is a unique educational opportunity. Each
contestant prepares five arias, and sings one own choice and one
determined by judges. Northwest regional auditions are at Meany
Hall, UW campus, on Sunday, February 7, 2010, at 1 p.m.

Seattle Music Partners provides
after-school music lessons to elementary and middle school students
in underserved communities. Our mission is to help children learn
to play instruments and read music. To attain this goal, we recruit
accomplished high school and college-aged musicians to volunteer to
work with our students. Lessons are taught on a weekly basis in
one-on-one pairings or in small groups, and instruments are loaned
when needed. Students perform in several recitals each year,
showcasing their new skills and gaining valuable performance
experience. In addition, SMP works with area arts organizations to
bring nationally known musicians into the schools and to arrange
for field trips to music performances.

A funny, physical sidelong look at myths
and fairytales, Myth Understandings begins as pajama-clad future
scientists are test-driving their new automatic, personal thinking
machine, the "iHed", containing all the world's stories. Technical
disaster ensues. You've probably heard these stories before, but
not quite this way -- preposterous, absurd, superlative and
sophisticated.
Recommended for ages 5-13, with plenty of glee for grownups.
Seattle-based theater simple, award-winning, and internationally
acclaimed, has built a solid artistic reputation producing
literate, entertaining and occasionally jaw-dropping theatrical
experiences.

Funding Opportunities
|
 |
|
The following are some of the resources available
to schools, individual teachers and PTSAs seeking funding to
support arts education in the schools. Some of the grant
opportunities listed may not be "arts-specific," but the arts can
often address important educational issues such as closing the
achievement gap, creative teaching practices, educational
leadership, peer mentoring, community service, and parent
engagement. We will continue to highlight new sources each month as
well as link you to comprehensive lists or databases of grant
opportunities.
Please note that all competitive grants and/or new grants must
receive prior approval from the SPS Chief Academic Officer and
designated staff, this also includes any requests for District
participation in grants developed by outside partnerships or
groups. Grants and grant proposals are reviewed each Monday.
Requests for review must be received at least one week prior to the
Monday meeting. Please contact Kevin Corrigan, Office of Fiscal
Compliance & Grants at kgcorrigan@seattleschools.org

students. MHOF donates instruments to music programs where students
