Last Arts eNews of the School Year

This is the final Arts eNews for the 2008-2009 school year. We hope that this new monthly e-newsletter has been a valuable resource for learning about the multitude of community arts education opportunities available to Seattle Public School teachers, students, families and community members. As a new venture for SPS, we recognize there is always room for improvement. If you have any comments or suggestions on how to make the Arts eNews more effective, please feel free to email SPS Community Arts Liaison Kathleen Allen at kpallen@seattleschools.org. We will return with the Arts eNews in August. In the meantime, peruse this issue to help you make plans for the summer or next school year.

Finding the Right Program for You

Listings of programs, events and activities in the Arts eNews does not equate to an endorsement by the Seattle Public Schools. We encourage all potential program participants to assess how each listing meets their needs, especially when establishing long term partnerships. If you would like assistance in matching right program for your school's or studets's needs, please feel to contact Community Arts Liaison Kathleen Allen kpallen@seattleschools.org. Specific questions about the programs, however, should be addressed directly to the sponsoring arts organization that has provided SPS with program information.

This month we feature an arts organization's efforts to integrate dance instruction, the least taught art form in our schools, into other areas of the curriculum.

Pacific Northwest Ballet's DISCOVER DANCE Program in Seattle Public Schools

Pacific Northwest Ballet's in-school DISCOVER DANCE program was launched in 1998, with an added a performance component two years later. The program brings dance education programs to Seattle and Eastside schools and gives participants an opportunity to discover movement, creativity, choreography, and performance. Students in grades 2-8 work with PNB Teaching Artists, over three- to five-month residencies, to create original choreographic works specifically designed to be integrated into their academic curriculum. The students then perform their works onstage at McCaw Hall. Classes also get a behind-the-scenes look at a professional ballet company, including field trips to rehearsal studios, production offices, and the costume shop. PNB's largest Community Education program, DISCOVER DANCE gives students a unique and comprehensive learning experience that mirrors professional practices in the dance world. PNB's Teaching Artists guide students to transform themselves into artists, fostering confidence, creativity, trust, and camaraderie among students.

Pacific Northwest Ballet's DISCOVER DANCE program has been awarded $40,000 for the 2009-2010 school year from the National Endowment for the Arts. The NEA award will permit a substantial increase to programming capacity, allowing up to 16 classrooms from 6 Seattle Public Schools to take part. In the 2009-2010 school year, classrooms from Arbor Heights Elementary, Alternative School #1, Broadview Thomson K-8, Daniel Bagley Elementary, Highland Park Elementary, and Graham Hill Elementary will participate in the program. The culmination of the students' work will be showcased at two DISCOVER DANCE performances on November 14, 2009, and April 24, 2010 at Marion Oliver McCaw Hall.

About Pacific Northwest Ballet's Education and Community Programs
Pacific Northwest Ballet's Education and Community Programs invite the community to see, learn, and engage in dance. From specially priced matinees and in-school residencies to audience lectures, PNB offers an innovative spectrum of programs as diverse as the community in which we live. Through three distinct youth program areas, (EYES ON DANCE, DANCE TO LEARN, and DANCE CONNECTS), PNB reaches students and teachers of all backgrounds and experience levels. PNB also offers six unique audience education opportunities for adults wishing to expand their theater experiences. To learn more visit www.pnb.org/outreach.

Report on Arts Activity in Seattle Public Schools Now Available Online

The first district-wide review of arts learning and teaching in our schools was conducted this fall. Data was gathered and analyzed in five areas: arts instruction and activities; resources for arts teaching and activities; barriers to the arts; policy and assessment; and attitudes regarding the arts. The survey report provides a high-level picture of arts instruction and access in SPS, with attention to issues of equity.

It is under the leadership of Dr. Goodloe-Johnson and with support from the City of Seattle, that Seattle Public Schools has undertaken this needs analysis survey as a part of an effort to revitalize arts education in the schools. The next step is to develop an expanded education committee of the Seattle Arts Commission who will advise on the development of a two-year strategic work plan for the Seattle Public Schools Visual and Performing Arts Department. As well, community arts organizations that work in schools are convening to discuss how to most effectively support a comprehensive and sequential arts education for all SPS students.

SPS Community Invited to hear National Education Leaders Speak at SAM Lecture Series, "Art Goes to School: Building a Community of Thinkers"

Artists as Educators: What Is the Role of the Teaching Artist? - A Web-posium
June 19, 2009
10-11:30 am
Plestcheeff Auditorium, Seattle Art Museum

What is the role of the teaching artist in public education? How can schools maximize a partnership with an outside artist? What is the artist's role in the classroom, in the art room, in the school? How can artists help build a culture in a school where creativity, innovation and imagination are at the core of teaching and learning? This web-posium, funded by the Dana Foundation, features a roundtable discussion with local and national experts on arts education.

Presenter Russell Granet is director of Arts Education Resource and an internationally recognized leader in arts education. Granet started Arts Education Resource in 2007 after a decade as Director of Professional Development and Peer Exchange at the Center for Arts Education (CAE): The NYC Annenberg Challenge for Arts Education, whose primary mission is to make quality arts education an essential part of every child's education. He has acted as advisor to such cultural organizations as Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute, Guggenheim Museum, the New 42nd Street Project and VSA arts. His work in arts education has taken him throughout the United States and internationally to Egypt, England, India, Kenya, Tanzania, Turkey and this summer Hong Kong.

BTiC is an engaging, fun, five-day intensive summer workshop that will teach you ways to integrate drama into your entire curriculum. First-hand involvement allows time to test ideas and build them into workable, practical lesson plans. In addition to the hands-on activities, you'll have the opportunity to "try out" curriculum in a supportive environment with professional Teaching Artists and our resident Teen Interns, then walk away with an extensive resource notebook. Clock hours and university credit are available.
